The Bears bounced back from three successive defeats on Saturday with an 80 points to six demolition of Essex Eels. A much improved Eels side couldn't live with the home side who, almost back to full strength, ran in fifteen tries, with the Essex side only managing to muster the one. Returnee backs Kurt Johnson, Tony Allcock and AJ Veamatahau plundered eight tries between them - AJ notching four, and Man-of-the-Match Johnson grabbing a first-half hat-trick. Further scores came from Tony Wildsmith (2), Troy Perkins, Daniel Brown, Iestyn Pratt, and props Gareth Barron and James Howitt.

NOTE: The Bears RLC match against Birmingham at Old Coventrians on Saturday has been rescheduled. Kick-off is now 12:45pm

Match Preview - Bears vs Essex Eels, Old Coventrians RFC, 14th May, 2.30pm KO - the Bears welcome Essex Eels on Saturday, in what should be a great game of attacking Rugby League.
After three straight losses, the Bears are looking for a much needed win, and hopefully the return of three players from last year's Grand Final win will help in that quest.
Crowd favourite and top-scorer, centre Kurt Johnson, National 3 Player of the Year out-half Adrian Veamatahau, and winger Tony Allcock all return after loan spells at other clubs, and all will be expected to have a major impact on Cov's style of play - much commented upon this season by pundits as being 'too forward oriented'.
Essex have improved dramatically since the sides last clashed at Old Coventrians when Cov ran out comfortable 100-6 winners.

The Eels, however, are a different outfit now, and started this season with a big win against Carlisle, followed by a draw against Birmingham and then two narrow defeats to form sides Huddersfield and Hemel Hempstead.
Coach Perkins believes that this week's team selection comes close to his ideal for the first time since last October, and feels that a win today would be a springboard to an overdue recovery, and hopefully a march back up the table and the play-off zone.
Team: Mark Hyslop, Tony Allcock, Kurt Johnson, Iestyn Pratt, Tony Wildsmith, Adrian Veamatahau, Scott Clendenning-Fenton, James Howitt, Joe Smith, Alan Robinson, Ian Mcgregor, Lee Ashford, Troy Perkins, Daniel Brown, Gareth Barron, Rhidian Booth, Tim Stevens

Message from Jim Mangan: Could all RLC players we haven't seen yet due to Union commitments, and anybody who would like to give League a go, please turn up for training Tuesdays and Thursdays. Old Coventrians RFC, Tile Hill Lane, 7pm.

Match Preview - Bears vs Huddersfield Underbank Rangers (30/04/05) - On Saturday, 6:30pm kick-off, the Bears welcome Huddersfield Underbank Rangers to the Butts Park Arena.
"The last two weeks have most probably been the toughest since my involvement started with the Bears just under two years ago, said Coach Troy Perkins yesterday. "We were humbled by Sheffield here two weeks ago, losing our proud unbeaten home record of well over a year, and then embarrased by a fairly decent team in Bramley last Sunday.
"We were crippled with injuries once again, but leaving that aside, our defence needs to improve radically if we are going to reach the heights of last season. At least, only six days after that nightmare, we have the opportunity to show what we are capable of, and return to winning ways."
Huddersfield have been performing well this season and today will be a good test of the team's resolve to put things right. The last time we met was the first game last season when we ran out convincing winners. However, things are expected to be a lot closer this time.
This year's National League 3 seems to be a lot closer than previous seasons with Bradford and Bramley leading the way with four wins from four and some of the lesser-performing teams from last year are showing much-improved results, with Essex surprising everyone with a 70 point win over Carlisle a couple of weeks ago.
Team: Mark Hyslop, Ian Grime, Iestyn Pratt, Tony Wildsmith, Stuart Lee, Tristan Ramsey, Andy Regan, James Howitt, Scott Clendenning-Fenton, Alan Robinson, Matt Wright, Chris McBride, John Fitt, Rob Morford, Tim Stevens, Rhidian Booth, Tim Aldridge

15/4/05 - Players please note: From NEXT WEEK, training will be at Old Coventrians on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm.

14/4/05 - This weekend the Bears welcome Sheffield Hillsbrough Hawks to the Arena. The Yorkshire club have assembled a very good squad for this season and, in the opinion of Bears player/coach Troy Perkins, are contenders for a top-four finish.

Last season we had two very tough battles with them, resulting in a narrow 16-12 away loss then a 36-18 home win in our first ever game at the Butts Arena.
We have had a tremendous start to the season, with a very determined win against Warrington followed by a good away win to Gateshead to make us early front-runners in our quest to retain the title.

The club welcomes back big Chris McBride for his first game of the season after a stint playing rugby league in the south of France at Lezignan.

Team: 1. Mark Hyslop, 2. Matt Wharton, 3. John Fitt, 4. Tony Wildsmith, 5. Andrew Kaminsa, 6. Andy Regan, 7. Scott Clendenning-Fenton; 8. Alan Robinson, 9. Joe Smith; 10. Gareth Barron; 11. Lee Ashford, 12. Tim Stevens, 13. Troy Perkins, 14. Ian Grime, 15. Chris McBride, 16. Danny Facer, 17. James Howitt

10/4/05 - Two on the bounce - Bears kept up their winning start to the season with a 52-24 defeat of Gateshead this afternoon.

8/4/05 - Travel to Gateshead - Supporters should note that the coach leaves the Butts Park Arena at 7.30 on Sunday morning. Cost is £5 per person.

2/4/05 - Bears carry on where they left off.

An unfamiliar-looking Bears squad took the league by the scruff of the neck once again this afternoon, defying the pundits to beat Warrington Wizards by 33 points to 30 at a sun-drenched Butts Park Arena.

The 'smart' money was always going to be on the match-ready Wizards finally overcoming their Bears bogey and avenging the Grand Final thrashing last October. However, Troy's boys had other ideas, and the side that he had dragged together from anywhere he could find a spare player stood up to everything the visitors could throw at them. Missing many of last season's players through other commitments, and totally lacking in any match practice whatsoever, it was more a case of seventeen heroic performances than a 'team' victory.

No worse for that though, and no less points in the bag....

31/03/05 LHF Healthplan National League 3, Season 3, starts Saturday 2nd of April, and it only seems like yesterday when we were running out at Halton Stadium in our first National 3 Grand Final.

Match Preview - Bears vs Warrington Wizards; Butts Park Arena, 2.30pm

This Saturday, in the first step towards defending our title, we meet Warrington (formerly Woolston Rovers) in a Grand Final 'replay' where I'm sure the word floating around the Wizards' changing room before the game will be revenge.

Last season's decider was tough and I'm expecting today's game to be just as tough - especially with us having such an interrupted pre-season.

Warrington have been involved in the 'Northern Trains' competition and they will have match fitness on their side. However it's a very long season and at the moment we are fresh and injury free which may be an advantage; and whatever happens, we will improve dramatically over the next few weeks.

It's been well documented that we have lost players over the off-season. However we have recruited some very talented replacements.

James Howitt

In the forwards we will have a monster pack with big Gareth Barron from Gateshead and even bigger James Howitt from Canberra in the front row.

They will join Alan 'Boomer' Robinson, Lee Ashford and Matt Wright in the engine room. Scotland Student representative John Fitt will also give us more depth in the back row.

Gareth Barron

Tristan Ramsay has joined us via North Sydney Bears, and he will slot in at stand-off to accompany Scott Clendenning-Fenton and the up-and-coming Stuart Lee in the halves.

Former Birmingham boy Iestyn Pratt will be in the centres and should make a formidable pairing with Kurt Johnson who will be available at the end of April.

It's also great to see so many local lads wanting to be involved with rugby league, including new boy Danny Facer on the bench, and I have no doubt that the squad we have put together can lift the national 3 trophy again in seven months time.

Enjoy the game. Troy

Saturday's Team

1. Mark Hyslop, 2. Dave Clements, 3. John Fitt, 4. Iestyn Pratt, 5. Andrew Kaminsa, 6. Tristan Ramsay, 7. Stuart Lee, 8. Alan Robinson, 9. Joe Smith, 10. Gareth Barron, 11. Lee Ashford, 12. Matt Wright, 13. Troy Perkins, 14. Ian Grime, 15. Tim Stevens, 16. Danny Facer, 17. James Howitt

1/3/05 - Coventry Bears have made another very significant signing in the form of National 3 prop-of-the-year Gareth Baron. Gareth comes to us via Gateshead Storm and the professional club, Gateshead Thunder.
"Gareth will be a great acquisition for the Bears, said Troy Perkins. "He is a great guy, and having played against him last year, I know he will add size and aggression to an already massive forward pack. He has trained with the team a couple of times and he has impressed me with his skills and knowledge of the game".
The Bears have also given a trial to a Patrick Carlisle, a second rower, who comes from Northern Ireland. "Patrick is only 19 and is from a rugby union background, said Perkins.  "However he wanted to have a go at rugby league, and arrived in Coventry last week and has settled in well. He is very keen and willing to learn, and I hope he will be involved with our National 3 squad at some point this season".

16/2/05 - New and updated 2005 Fixture Lists now available HERE

14/2/05 - The Bears have acted to strengthen their front row by signing 110kg prop James Howitt.

James is from Canberra and is here on the recommendation of Clinton Scott-Knight. "After the loss of Chris McBride to Lezignan we needed another big prop to lead from the front, said player-coach Troy Perkins, "and I think we have found the ideal replacement in James. He will arrive in Coventry on 13th March".

Note that training is now at Old Coventrians RFC on Mondays and Wednesdays (7pm).

7/2/05 - Off-Peak Bears Crash out in Yorkshire. The Bears must be getting used to tough away ties in the Challenge Cup - but they'll never get used to losing matches, even if they are played at the worst possible time for a Summer team...report HERE

13/1/05 - Training and Get-together. Players should note that training for the Challenge Cup match will commence on January 26th at 6.30pm at Old Coventrians RFC, Tile Hill Lane (followed by Feb 2nd same time & place).

Also, for anyone that is interested in playing, sponsoring the team or individual players - or indeed this website, or helping the club in any other way in the new season, there will be an informal get-together in the Glasshouse (Bull Yard, city centre) on Sunday 23rd of January at 3pm. We need help in all sorts of areas from manning the turnstiles to selling programmes and raffle tickets, selling Bears replica clothing, recording stats, draft report writing, secretarial duties, etc. etc. etc.

It's not what the Bears can do for you, it's what you can do for the Bears!!!! (to paraphrase some famous bloke...).

5/1/05 - More news of new signings. Coventry Bears have made one of their biggest signings to date with Tarei McKenzie agreeing to join us for the upcoming season. Tarei, like recent acquisition Tristan Ramsay, has been playing for North Sydney Bears, and is a stand-off with loads of potential. He has also made several appearances in the NRL for the Manly Sea Eagles.

After losing Clinton Scott-Knight at the end of last season, Coach Troy Perkins knew he was up against it trying to find a suitable replacement, but he feels that Tarei will slot into the team well, and will help the team to build on the expansive and very successful rugby they played last season on the way to the NL3 championship.

Troy is also chasing an Australian prop, and is confident that then the recruitment drive will then be complete as the club has also been lucky enough to acquire the services of local resident Matt Loomes, who has played at a high level in Australia with Balmain Tigers. Matt is a smart and skilful hooker/scrum-half and has the reputation of giving 100% every time he takes the field.

"I am really looking forward to this season", said Perkins. "We know that we have a mighty task in front of us to become back-to-back champions, although I am confident that with the squad we are putting together we will be equipped to give the National 3 title another shake. We will use the Challenge Cup game in early February to have a look at a couple of the younger players. Then there will be two friendly matches in late March before the season starts on April 2nd with that huge game against Warrington".

2/1/05 - 2005 Regular season fixtures published. Please note that these are draft, so are subject to change. This season the league will consist of twelve teams with each team playing each other home and away. As yet I have no details of the play-offs format.

Note that South London Storm and Manchester have both moved on, and Widnes Saints, who were originally slated to join the league have now declined.

13/12/04 - Coventry Bears have made their first new overseas signing of the close-season in 21 year old Australian Tristan Ramsay. Tristan has been playing First Division NRL for the last two years with North Sydney Bears. "Tristan is a fantastic player" said Bears' coach Troy Perkins. "He can play in the centres, on the wing and at fullback, and has been playing just one division below the NRL in Sydney and I'm sure he will be a great signing for Coventry. I have watched a couple of videos of him and he impressed me with his skills. He's an electric runner with the ball. I will look at playing him in the centres as an ideal replacement for Adrian Veamatahua".

Troy also says he is close to signing three more aussies who will be more than capable of filling the shoes of the guys that have moved on since the Grand Final.

18/11/04 - Note from Dr Nick Evans at the Student Rugby League...The SRL is putting a refereeing course on at one of the Universities in the Midlands, venue TBC on Saturday and Sunday 5th and 6th of December.
We have 12 places to fill on this course and the SRL will cover the cost.

17/11/04 - Apologies for the delay (all manner of disasters and a holiday intervened), but there are a few more pictures now online from the Grand Final and after-match celebrations HERE

14/10/04 - Snippets.

A couple of e-mails came through recently from other national sporting clubs in the city...

First, from Coventry Rugby Union Club's General Manager Graham Robbins:

"Congratulations to the Bears. Terrific result!"

and from James O'Grady at The Coventry Jaguars:

"CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!

To the entire Coventry Aquatics Bears organisation. For a great season and a wonderful Final game.

All the best for the 2005 season from the management, coaches and players of the Coventry Jaguars American Football Club."

Tony Allcock tells me we will soon be in a position to distribute the DVD of the Grand Final to players and other members. I predict the first fifty minutes will get played again and again and.....

Please register your interest with Ron Banks on the usual number.

There is an excellent piece in tonight's Evening Telegraph - including a couple of fantastic photos ;o). Unfortunately it doesn't appear to be on their website so you'll need to nip out and get a copy sharpish.

Final Player Stats are now online. Click HERE to view (unless your name is Adrian Veamatahau when you might want to avoid it. Bad luck AJ - there's always next year.

And finally, I have also updated the Honours page to reflect this season's achievements. Click HERE. If I've missed anything, please let me know.

CHAMPIONS!!!!!

11/10/04 - Yesterday the amazing all-conquering Bears produced the display of rugby league football that they had been saving all season to secure the LHF Healthplan National League Grand Final Trophy at Widnes' Halton Stadium.

click

In front of the glitterati of the Rugby League world - including Widnes Chairman Tony Chambers, a Cov Kid and self-confessed Bears fan - the Cov boys simply blew away the challenge of holders Warrington Woolston Rovers with a sensational display of running rugby.

Four-try center Kurt Johnson also secured the David Oxley Trophy, the Man-of-the-Match award, voted for by the members of the media.

5/10/04 - Grand Final Ticket and Travel News - as the excitement mounts prior to the big kick-off...

Coventry Aquatics Bears fans' can benefit - if they are very quick - from club travel to the match at Widnes on Sunday, and by pre-booking their seat. We are informed that the stadium is sold out for the three matches, but the club has managed to secure just a few tickets for sale to bona-fide Bears fans. These cover ALL THREE Grand Finals (National Leagues 1, 2 and - most important of course - 3) and are available at a genuine value-for-money price of just £15.

Along with this, the club has booked a coach for supporters, and there are a very limited amount of seats left (we kicked the players off to make room for you) at £10 per person. The coach leaves the Butts at 7.30am prompt on Sunday morning

I can't emphasise enough that there are very few seats and tickets left, so if you want to be in on this, the biggest day ever in the Club's history, contact Ron Banks now on 07956 251379.

That's NOW!!!

3/10/04 - Glory Beckoning? The Coventry Aquatics Bears slipped smoothly into the Grand Final with a 32-18 win over Bramley Buffaloes at the Butts Park Arena yesterday evening.

In a sometimes fractious 'cup-tie' in which players from both sides cooled their heels in the sin-bin, the Bears gave a 'curates-egg' display. Looking fragile in defence early on, they then formed a brick wall to deny any way back to the visitors in a late surge which saw Bramley mount a tremendous - yet fruitless - siege on the Bears' goal-line.

A hat-trick from Kurt Johnson, two for Lee Ashford and one for Chris McBride sealed the win - taking the sequence to 12 in a row, with the last reversal coming on the 3rd of July.

Report HERE and updated Stats HERE

1/10/04 - Just what the Doctor ordered. Coventry Aquatics Bears go into tomorrow's LHF Healthplan National League Three semi-final with the luxury of being able to pick from a full-strength squad for the first time in many weeks. And last weekend's enforced break from action may have been exactly what the doctor ordered as it gave several of the walking wounded the chance to overcome their injuries and report fit for training this week.

Returnees to the starting line-up include influential second-row forward Matt Wright, ultra-reliable full-back Mark Hyslop, yard-making prop Chris McBride, and quicksilver inside-half Scott Clendenning-Fenton - partnering a very much on-form Clinton Scott-Knight. And with the firepower of Mick Curtis, Lee Ashford, Ian McGregor and Jonny Fairhurst coming off the bench, the Cov side has a formidable look about it.

The forward pack is completed by back-to-fitness captain Alan Robinson, consistently outstanding hooker Alex Brown, and the ever-improving  Ty Watson - man-of-the-match last time out.

Kurt Johnson continues in the centres having scored 13 tries in his previous eight appearances, and partners Adrian Veamatahau - up for the NL3 'Player-of-the-Year' award at the end of season RFL Dinner. Free-scoring and elusive wingers Simon Brocklehurst and Tony Allcock complete the threequarter line-up.

Bears' coach Troy Perkins - also in line for a major award, the NL3 'Coach-of-the-Year' gong  - is taking nothing for granted however. "We just need to keep our heads on and not be complacent - I've spoken to the players about that and told them we don't want to walk off the field with any regrets" he said, speaking to the Coventry Evening Telegraph yesterday.

With a big win over Bramley early in the season, the omens look good - but nobody at the club is underestimating the challenge - and will have noted the Buffaloes' massive win over St Albans last weekend.

Kick-off is at 6pm at the Butts Park Arena, Coventry. Entrance costs £3, but anyone staying behind after the Coventry vs London Welsh match (3pm KO) will be able to transfer for just one pound.

Team: Hyslop, Brocklehurst, Johnson, Veamatahau, Allcock, Scott-Knight, Clendenning-Fenton, Robinson, Brown, McBride, Wright, Watson, Perkins, Fairhurst, Curtis, McGregor, Ashford

12/9/04 - MINOR PREMIERS! Coventry Aquatics Bears today secured top spot of National League 3 on the final day of the 'normal' season by winning 28-18 at South London Storm.

With ten straight wins under their belts, the Bears have now completed a tremendous turn-around after finishing in a lowly eighth in the previous season.

Congratulations to all the the players who have competed so well this term, and to coach Troy Perkins on a magnificent season so far.

However, as Troy himself would point out, that's only the first hurdle, and the patched-up Bears team will need to be at its best if they are to carry off the big prize at Widnes' Halton Stadium in October.

Report, pictures and league table on the site tomorrow.

On a more mundane - but equally important subject, players should note that training from now on will take place on Mondays and Thursdays - same time, same place.

9/9/04 - Please Note that the coach for South London on Sunday will be at COUNDON ROAD at 9am.

7/9/04 This Sunday (12th September) sees the first Rugby League international match to be played at the newly opened Butts Park Arena. The match is an eagerly awaited clash between the England 'Lionhearts' and Wales Amateur sides, and promises to be a real cracker.

Coventry Aquatics Bears 32-20 St Albans

Cov toiled manfully to overcome a strong Centurions outfit this afternoon in their last match at Old Coventrians before the move to our new home at the Butts Park Arena.

A good start proved to be the difference between the two sides as St Albans staged a storming late recovery, but the home side held on to snap up the points.

Rugby League’s Coming Home!!

After a long, long wait, Rugby League returns to its original Coventry home of the Butts Stadium (now known as Butts Park Arena) on the 5th of September.
With the kind permission of opponents the Hillsborough Hawks and the Rugby Football League, the original match date of Saturday 4th September has been put back to the Sunday to accommodate this historic match (KO 2.30).
Rugby League was played by Coventry FC at the Butts until 1913, but was never resumed after the Great War, so this match is seen as 'Rugby League Coming Home' at last!
Cut price entry offers will be available to those spectators turning up in replica shirts of their LHF National League 3 club, TotalRL. com Conference club, Coventry RFC, or other local rugby clubs and bona-fide sports clubs from the Coventry and Warwickshire area.

More details will follow closer to the day of the match.

Player Stats also updated HERE and League table HERE

14/8/04 - The Bears increased their winning sequence to six matches with an at times slightly shambolic but ultimately deserved 46-24 win at Birmingham this afternoon. After the start was delayed by 65 minutes due to problems with the Moor Lane pitch, the Cov team conspired - once with the aid of a curious decision by the referee - to squander several chances to establish a commanding early lead, and then stuttered in the last twenty to give the scoreline a rather flattering look for the home side.

Eight Bears players got on the try-scoring tally, with efforts by McBride, Hyslop, Robinson, Perkins, Clendenning-Fenton, Scott-Knight, Brown and Ashford, while Hyslop topped up with a 100% kicking display of seven conversions - the only miss coming from the boot of winger Tom Shaw.

8/8/04 - Bears were awarded a scoreline of 42-13 in lieu of the match vs Carlisle that was cancelled earlier this week. The resultant two points (along with Woolston's defeat at the hands of Bramley) has the effect of lifting the team to second in Division 3, equal on points with Dudley Hill and two points above Woolston. (Table HERE)

04/7/04 - Carlisle Match CANCELLED - Due to the Carlisle club's inability to raise a competitive side for this their third long trip in a row, they have reluctantly had to concede the match. The points will be awarded to the Bears with a minimum 24-0 scoreline.

31/7/04 - Match Results: Coventry Aquatics Bears 54-28 Hemel Stags and Coventry Aquatics Bears 12-30 Leicester Phoenix.

Both matches were played at the same time at Old Covents, under a blazing sun. Contrasting fortunes though, as a much-weakened Conference side, having lost several regulars to an injury-ravaged 'Firsts' bowed out of this year's TotalRL.com competition. The boys can take some satisfaction however from the contribution they made to the 'other' team's superb win over Division 3 form side Hemel Stags.

Coventry Aquatics Bears 19-18 Woolston Rovers.

19/7/04 - Reports on both of Saturday's matches are now online HERE.

17/7/04 - Firstly, massive congratulations to the TotalRL.com Conference boys on finishing the regular season as 'Minor Premiers' in the South Midlands Conference - carrying on a proud tradition for the Coventry club. They came away from Wolverhampton with an excellent 44-12 win, proving that their recent improvement in form - undefeated in five games - is no fluke.

Not to be outshone, the firsts consolidated third place in National League 3 with a big - and crucial - 62-10 win at Gateshead, proving once again that Bears can travel.

A glance at the table now shows Cov to be on 18 points, the same as Dudley Hill, and four points clear of St. Albans.

Next week's home clash with Woolston now takes on an even more important edge, with a win essential to help close the gap.

Reports to be added as soon as available.

15/7/04 - Saturday's Conference match will be played at The Four Ashes Pub, Station Drive, Wolverhampton.

Directions: Leave the M6 at Junction 12. Take the A5 towards Telford. At the next roundabout (Gailey Island), turn left onto the A449 and follow the dual carriageway for about 1mile. The Four Ashes pub is on the left.

Turn left into Station drive and then left into the Four Ashes car park. The changing rooms will be straight in front of you.

Refreshments are available in the Four Ashes pub before, during and after the game.

An after-match hot meal will be provided for all playing staff and match officials in the Four Ashes pub.

Contact number - 07939 999640 (Mark Austin).

13/7/04 - This and That…

Fill your Face…. There will be a club dinner after training this Wednesday evening at 8.30pm at the Wing Wah Chinese Restaurant, on the junction of Broad Lane and the A45.

Everyone is welcome and most of the first team have already confirmed attendance.

Five-a-Day….Next Tuesday 20th July between 11am and 1pm at Coventry Market (City Centre) there is a promotion day (Five-a-Day). This is intended to reinforce the campaign to get everyone to eat five portions of fruit or veg every day.

There will be Bears players giving out family passes for matches, and Bears merchandise.

The mascot will be there too – in a too-tight shirt.

TotalRL.com Conference South Midlands Division Play-offs….Now that the play-offs are a reality for the ‘A’ team, here is confirmation of how it will work this season.

Week 1 - 2nd vs 3rd.  Loser eliminated

Week 2 - 1st vs Winner from Week 1

Week 3 - Winner South Midlands vs Winner North Midlands (Home team decided by best regular season record).

That’s clear enough I hope!

11/7/04 - Reports for Manchester and Leicester matches now online HERE

10/7/04 - Wins for both sides today.

The firsts beat Manchester Knights 24-18 in an extremely hard-fought and close battle at Old Coventrians, with Cov's superior place-kicking through the reliable boot of Mark Hyslop swaying things.

It's always a bit of a grudge between these two teams, and so it proved today with a fair bit of 'insider-dealing' taking place, and a sending-off to close the day (fortunately not the usual protagonist this time. You know, the one that usually sees red when the Manchester boys line up against us, and I don't mean their shirt colour...).

Meanwhile the 'A' team took the spoils over at 'The (other) Auld Enemy' Leicester Phoenix with a 28-24 victory. A great result for the often-overlooked second-string, consolidating their top spot in the TotalRL.com Conference.

9/7/04 - You turn your back for a week and look what happens... I've just been informed that the Cov Evening Telegraph are putting it about that our home match against Manchester is on Sunday!

IT IS NOT... it is TOMORROW, SATURDAY at Old Covents, KO 2.30pm as usual.

Where they got that idea from I haven't a clue. (Where are you John Wilkinson? They've lost the plot down on the sports desk).

At least we'll get five spectators - from the Windmill Golf Club. Thanks for calling and querying the date chaps!!

Can we sue for loss of income?

(However, some folks can't take a joke it seems....oh well. What is it they say about the written word not conveying the position of your tongue in your cheek? Perhaps I should have added a 'smiley'? I decided to leave this on here even though it obviously upset the entire sports desk - which it wasn't meant to. It certainly was only written in jest, and to remove it would probably be seen to intimate otherwise).

8/7/04  Please note that training will be on Monday and Wednesday evenings at Old Coventrians RFC (6.30)

8/7/04 - Dudley Hill Report plus Player Stats and League Tables now updated.

1/7/04 - As the Bears head North on Saturday I will be a few hundred miles in the opposite direction for a few days long-overdue R&R. Unfortunately this means the site will not be updated until at least Wednesday. If anyone feels like putting the scores on the Forum, please be my guest.

Best of luck to both teams this weekend.

Oh, sorry, no match preview available yet, so that probably won't make it onto the site either. Sorry.

30/6/04 - England Lionhearts will play Wales at the new Butts Park Arena - soon to be home of the Bears - on September 12th (KO 3pm).

Details of Hospitality packages etc and contact details can be found on the attached FLYER. You will need Acrobat Viewer v5 minimum to view - available from Adobe (free download).

The brand-new Butts Arena will provide the perfect backdrop for this prestigious match, with a minimum of 3,000 covered seats available, plus a range of hospitality suites and public bars. The stadium is close to many good pubs and restaurants (including the infamous 'Craven Run' - ask any Cov Kid or see the spON-LINE link below left!), and is a short walk from the city centre and the railway station. Should be a great day out.

29/6/04 - National 3 Player Stats and League Table updated. (And I just moved a bunch of old stuff from this page to the 'Archive' page in case you were wondering).

27/6/04 - Result from Tile Hill Lane - Coventry Aquatics Bears 46-14 South London Storm.  The Bears weathered a real 'storm' early on in this clash as the South London boys - fresh off the plane - served up a warning that they were definitely not going to let jet-lag put them off their stride. The visitors matched everything Cov could throw at them in the first quarter, but eventually pressure told and the Bears stretched away to a comfortable win by 46 points to 14.

There were great performances by AJ Veamatahau, fresh-faced young debutant Mickey Curtis, and Man of the Match Scott Clendenning-Fenton  (even if the latter couldn't down a pint of lager to save his life!).

Welcome to Rugby League Mick...

24/6/04 - Match Preview - Coventry Aquatics Bears vs South London Storm, at Old Coventrians, Sunday 2.30pm  - The Coventry Aquatics Bears host a South London Storm side - fresh from their antipodean tour - on Sunday, and are expecting an extremely tough game. Storm are a big physical side also possessing good halves that will need to be shut down to give the home side a realistic chance of winning. Coach Troy Perkins has been able to select a strong side, but has used the opportunity to shake things up a little with several positional changes, and a debutant involved.
South London, like the Bears, have lost two games and second place in the LHF Division 3 is at stake. The Bears are on 12 points, with a chasing pack of four sides on 10, so nobody will be taking Sunday's encounter lightly.
Inspirational prop and captain Alan Robinson misses the game with a knee injury, but Perkins brings in Cov RU centre Mick Curtis in the second row as cover. Mickey was due to make his debut earlier in the season but last-minute family commitments scuppered his start. His fire-power and direct ball-in-hand running could turn out to be a real asset this weekend though.
Regular scrum-half Scott Clendenning-Fenton moves to hooker as part of the pack reorganisation, with regular hooker Alex Brown starting on the bench to be used as an impact player. John Fairhurst returns to duty in the loose forward spot. Forwards Ty Watson and Ian McGregor also return after missing last week's Hillsborough clash.
In the back division, last week's Man-of-the-Match Clinton Scott-Knight slots into the vacated berth behind the forwards.
Dave Campton moves to the centres, from the second row, to give him the opportunity to run wide and utilise his size and speed a little more - a role Dave is very familiar and comfortable with.
James Hunt, after leaving the field in an ambulance last week, has made a superb recovery and will take his place on the bench.
"Last week our defence improved dramatically, said Perkins, but our ball security let us down.
"This weekend our good defence will need to continue and our attack will have to be at its best to get the two points".

Starting Line-up (number changes to be confirmed):

Mark Hyslop, Dean Thompson, Dave Campton, Adrian Veamatahau, Tom Shaw, John Fairhurst, Clinton Scott-Knight, Chris McBride, Scott Clendenning-Fenton, Lee Ashford, Mick Curtis, Ian McGregor, Troy Perkins, Alex Brown, Ty Watson, Ken Dowding, James Hunt

20/6/04 - Good and Bad news from yesterday's matches yesterday, with a win being enough to get the RLC lads to the top of the table, and a narrow defeat slowing the ND3 side's gallop slightly.

But I reckon the best news of the day was seeing teenage flyer James Hunt returning from hospital on his own two feet. James was involved in an incident that left him flat-out for around twenty minutes while the ambulance was called. It was an anxious time for all as James lay inert, head supported by the Hillsborough physio. You can't be too careful in these situations, but thankfully we didn't have a genuine tragedy on our hands.

James was in another world on the bus on the way home, but hopefully will make a swift return to duty.

The 16-12 reversal took backstage somewhat - but it's worth making the point that the Bears equalled the Hawks with three tries, and only wayward kicking from near the (wrong) touchline into a very strong breeze gave the Hawks the points.

The return match will be one to savour.

Match reports will follow when available.

16/6/04 - Details of Coach Travel to away games has been added to the site HERE

15/6/04 - League Tables page updated to reflect Sunday's win by Woolston in ND3.

12/6/04 - (Reports and more pix now Online HERE)  - Essex can perhaps feel themselves a little unfortunate to have to visit Tile Hill Lane on a day that the Bears were regrouping after 'that' trip. In the event, Cov let rip, running in tries from all over the park, and amassing a scoreline of 100-4 while leapfrogging second-placed St. Albans by dint of a superior points difference.

Masterly displays by too many players to mention - OK, we'll single out 'Glasshouse' Man-of-the-Match Al Robinson - left the Eels with a torrent to swim against. As one happy spectator commented after the final whistle, "eels only make a light snack for hungry bears". No disrespect intended at all though, as the visitors pounded away for eighty minutes, gaining a well-deserved and well-worked consolation try in the dying minutes.

Report and more pix to follow soon. (Click pix to see a larger version).

The RLC team kept their end up too with an excellent 62-22 win at new-boys Rugby Raiders. I hope to have a picture or two from that game if the verballer keeps his promise....

9/6/04 - On Saturday Coventry Aquatics Bears take on National 3 new boys Essex Eels at Old Coventrians, Tile Hill Lane.
Essex come to Coventry having suffered six heavy defeats from as many matches. However Bears coach Troy Perkins is expecting a tough game -  "I am giving a few players an opportunity to impress by picking them in the run-on team" said Perkins after Tuesday evening's tough training session. "James Hunt has been selected on the wing in place of Tom Shaw who starts on the bench due to some niggling injuries he is carrying. Joe Smith starts at half-back and even though Scott Clendenning-Fenton is fit to play I will use him off the bench. Dave Campton makes his season's debut for the Bears in the second row and I'm sure will have a big game. He is joined by Tony Wildsmith who will appreciate his first starting game too. Each week Tony is improving and each week he is getting more comfortable with Rugby League".
Lee Ashford also starts on the bench and will be used as an impact player. Ashford, Al Robinson and Chris McBride will all rotate in the prop position."
Perkins has named a slightly changed line up from that of the past few weeks, resting some players and giving some of the younger players a chance to impress. "I'm confident that all 17 will do a great job and we will get the two points. We have worked really hard on defence this week at training as it let us down badly against St. Albans, and I'm expecting a big improvement in that area this weekend."
Team: 1. Mark Hyslop, 2. James Hunt, 3. Adrian Veamatahau, 4. Tony Allcock, 5. Dean Thompson, 6. Clinton Scott-Knight, 7. Joe Smith, 8. Alan Robinson, 9. Alex Brown, 10. Chris McBride, 11. Dave Campton, 12. Tony Wildsmith, 13. John Fairhurst, 14. Tom Shaw, 15. Scott Clendenning-Fenton, 16. Ian McGregor, 17. Lee Ashford

2/6/04 - Result from Tile Hill Lane; Coventry Aquatics Bears 50-12 Birmingham Bulldogs. Report to follow.

1/6/04 - Coventry Aquatics Bears take on Birmingham in a National 3 ‘local derby’ tomorrow (KO 7.30 at Old Coventrians' ground, Tile Hill Lane.

The Bears are aiming to extend this season’s record to five wins from five but are up against a very good side who have lost only one game this season.

“I watched Birmingham a few weeks ago and they were impressive", said player/coach Toy Perkins. "They have a big, physical forward pack who all love running with the ball. They also a have a good defensive pattern and they have an Australian stand-off who is a fantastic player and actually recently won the National 3 player of the month. If we can contain him and get him to make a lot of tackles he will be less effective in attack. Wednesday is another big test for us but I believe we can maintain our 100% win record”.

The Bears welcome back Mark Hyslop and Dean Thompson to the run-on side and stalwart Ian McGregor will make his first appearance for the home side this season. John Fairhurst moves to loose forward to replace the injured Troy Perkins (hamstring).

Team: 1. Mark Hyslop, 2. Tom Shaw, 3. Adrian Veamatahau, 4. Tony Allcock, 5. Dean Thompson, 6. Clinton Scott-Knight, 7. Scott Clendenning-Fenton, 8. Alan Robinson, 9. Alex Brown, 10. Chris McBride, 11. Lee Ashford, 12. Ian Mcgregor, 13. John Fairhurst, 14. Joe Smith, 15. Neil Lightowler, 16. Gareth Allan, 17. James Hunt

29/5/04 - It's been a very long day, but it's been a very good day. The Bears travelled all the way to Carlisle and came back with a 40-16 win. Job done.

Four matches - four wins. We couldn't ask for any more - yet it was only in the last quarter that the Bears - missing several regulars - stretched away to ensure the points came home. Report and interesting/embarrassing pictures to follow.

Not quite such good news from Old Covents where a badly-understrength Bears side came under the cosh losing 22-60 to Leicester.

28/5/04 Congratulations to Troy Perkins - Bears' Player/Coach - who has been confirmed as next season's Specialist Defence Coach for Coventry FC. Troy spent the last few weeks of the recently ended season at Cov attempting to shore up a leaky defence. That he was successful was proven by the late turn-round in results which saw the team step back from the very brink to survive in Rugby Union's National Division 1. Troy may soon be spending some time with Gloucester RFC's defence coach Dave Ellis and he sees this as a "great opportunity for me".

Good to see you sticking around for another English winter Troy....

More accolades for our cross-code colleagues. Popular prop forward and Wales amateur International Richard 'Chunky' Davies has been named as Old Coventrians' Player of the Season. Chunky received his award from England RU International prop and Cov Kid, Darren Garforth at the club's presentation dinner recently.

Many congratulations Rich.

And it's Old Coventrians for us next Wednesday evening after all! Despite plans to site the crucial clash with the Doggies at Broadstreet RFCs Ivor Preece Field, it has now been confirmed that we will be at Tile Hill Lane after all. Kick-off remains unchanged at 7:30

27/5/04 - The Coventry Aquatics Bears head to the far north of England this weekend to take on Carlisle Centurions. After recording their first win of the season last Saturday Carlisle will be looking for back-to-back wins, especially playing at home.
We are looking for our fourth win from as many starts - three away from home - and even though the side has been hit hard with injuries the big pack of forwards will be expected to front-up and build a platform for a valuable win.
Rugby Union converts Tony Wildsmith and Tony Allcock will form a new centre combination, and new faces come on to the interchange bench in Scott Carver and Neil Lightowler.
Lee Ashford, who normally plays at prop, had a great game in the second row last week and he starts there again this week, while regular centre John Fairhurst will join the pack, also in the second row.

Team: 1. Mark Hyslop, 2. Dean Thompson, 3. Tony Wildsmith, 4. Tony Allcock, 5. Tom Shaw, 6. Clinton Scott-Knight, 7. Scott Clendenning-Fenton, 8. Alan Robinson, 9. Alex Brown, 10. Chris McBride, 11. Lee Ashford, 12. John Fairhurst, 13. Troy Perkins, 14. Joe Smith, 15. Vincent Rabot, 16. Scott Carver, 17. Neil Lightowler

26/5/04 - Coach Travel to Carlisle. The club are running a coach to Carlisle on Saturday. There will be about 20 seats available to supporters. and the cost is yet to be decided - but will be nominal. It leaves Coundon Road at 7.30. Sounds early I know, but it's a long run, and it's a Bank Holiday weekend!

Just updated the League Tables. Very late this week - remiss of me, but it's been a busy week. Interesting to note (and good to see) that the two teams' records are almost identical - three wins, and a points difference of +66, with one team leading its division outright and the other joint top. What a great start to the season, and a big boost to the perception of Rugby League in the city. Shout it from the rooftops. Tell your mates. Let's make them all really take notice. This club is going places.

Afraid I haven't had time to update the Player Stats page as yet, and it now may not happen until after Saturday. I have the raw XLS file but it takes a bit of time to reformat it into the site's requirements. Apologies again...must do better.

23/5/04 Hemel Report and Pix, and Wizards report now online HERE

22/5/04 Result from Pennine Way. In a cat & mouse game that the Bears managed to hold sway over for much of the eighty minutes, the home side had to give best in the end when the Bears ran out winners by 40 points to 30 in a 12-try thriller. Full report & pix to follow.

The 'A' side also came up smiling with a 44-20 win over Wolverhampton.

21/5/04 Hemel vs Bears, Pennine Way, Hemel Hempstead, 22/5/04, 2.30 KO.  The Bears take on one of their traditional rivals in Hemel Hempstead on Saturday. This week's line-up has a very cosmopolitan feel with the usual selection of Aussie and Irish players supplemented by French student Vincent Rabot on the interchange bench. Vincent is over here studying at Coventry University, and impressed in a Conference game a few weeks ago - and was outstanding in the Bristol 9s last weekend. A versatile player, he can play in the second row, the centre or on the wing.

Even though Hemel have lost their first two games they have performed very well and the two teams they came up against - Bradford and Warrington - are both front-runners for this season's championship.

We have a few injury problems, with both Tim Stevens and Matt Wright unavailable. However, James Hunt, a star of the future and another member of last week's 9s winning squad, also benches. James is only 17 years old and has loads of potential and the confidence to run at defences, and has certainly proved that he has an eye for the try-line.

I'm confident that if we stick to our game plan, and the experienced players can help the young guys settle in, we will come home with the vital two points.

Troy Perkins

Don't forget that the Bears 'A' play Leicester at Old Covents tomorrow (KO 2.30). Kit will be on sale to supporters - if you think you have the figure for it  ;o)

16/5/04 - Bears add Bristol 9s to list. The Bears ventured into new terroritory today - the West Country - but quickly made themselves at home by winning the Bristol 9s.

Press Release:

COVENTRY BEARS WIN INAUGURAL FORTY-TWENTY.CO.UK BRISTOL & WEST 9s
National League Three pacesetters Coventry Bears put in an impressive display of running rugby to win the inaugural Forty-Twenty.co.uk Bristol & West Rugby League 9s competition at St Brendan's OB RFC, Filton.

The Bears lived up to their pre-tournament billing as overwhelming favourites by beating all-comers on route to a convincing 40-14 victory over Army Plate champions Blandford Bulldogs in an action-packed final. The Bears finished the afternoon with an impressive record of five wins and no defeats, scoring some 154 points in the process thanks to some superb running and ball-handling.

Wingers James Hunt and Tom Shaw were in outstanding form, claiming a bagful of tries apiece and narrowly missing out on the Brunel Medal for player of the tournament. That gong eventually went to Blandford Bulldogs outstanding second-rower David Bates, who showed just why he made 10 substitute appearances for Workington Town last season.

Speaking after the tournament, Bristol Sonics Chairman Phil Cole said: "We're absolutely delighted at the way the afternoon went. The sun shone, the spectators loved it and the rugby on display was fantastic.

Our congratulations must go to the Coventry Bears, who showed just why they're one of the best sides in National League Three this season. Congratulations, too, to the Sonics lads, who played magnificently to take away the Plate."

Squad: Dean Thompson, Tom Shaw, Adrian Veamatahau, Vincent Rabot, James Hunt, Clinton Scott-Knight, Chris McBride, John Fairhurst, Scott Clendenning-Fenton, Ken Dowding, Rich Davies, Troy Perkins

Plymouth RLFC 10 - 36 Coventry Bears

For the record, it was a fantastic afternoon - lots of speccies relaxing in the glorious sunshine and some fantastic rugby, particularly from the Bears. Hopefully we'll be doing it again next year, when the Cup Final weekend moves to August - Ron

9/5/04 - Bears 'firsts' keep up the run. The Bears club kept up its impressive start to the season, making it four out of four with an entertaining 48-14 nine try win over Bramley Buffaloes at Old Coventrians this afternoon. Report and pix HERE

9/5/04 - 'A' team win again. The Bears extended their winning start to the TOTALrl.com RLC season with a 24-18 win over Birmingham Bulldogs 'A' yesterday. Report HERE

7/5/04 - Team For Sunday - Troy Perkins has announced his team for Sunday's match against the Bramley Buffaloes (Old Coventrians, 2.30).

The line-up is largely the same as that which so clinically disposed of Underbank Rangers in round one last Sunday. However, the one casualty of that match - second row  - Nick Vasallo, has been replaced by Cov RU stalwart inside-centre Mick Curtis. Mick missed quite a few games in the recently-concluded RU campaign and is raring to get started in this, his debut rugby league outing. Son of Coventry City legend George, Mick is a very strong and direct runner with ball in hand and will be expected to make good yardage.

Nick Vasallo will now miss several games of the campaign having broken an arm.

That aside, Perkins expressed satisfaction at being able to select from strength, and being in a position to reward the rest of last week's starters - bench included - with selection.

3/5/04 - New Players - A round-up of some of the Bears' new signings; by Troy Perkins.

The Bears have been very busy recruiting quality players to bolster the squad this season, and have brought in some very exciting new signings - who are expected to contibute to a successful campaign. And it seems this optimism may be well-founded judging by last weekend's performances by both teams.

New Boys from Down-Under....

Chris McBride: Chris is a big prop (6'4 and 19 stones). He played for Newtown Jets in Sydney who compete in the 2nd Division. Chris is a strong ball runner and has the ability to offload in tackles and is expected to lead from the front.

Clinton Scott-Knight: Clinton is a stand-off who played in the junior teams of the Canberra Raiders. Very skilful, he has good vision and a great understanding with his best mate Adrian Veamatahua. They confirmed this by combining for some superb tries on Sunday.

Adrian Veamatahua: Adrian is a young centre from Tonga who has a bundle of speed and a rare ability to pop up all over the field. He has great vision and nearly always breaks the first tackle.

Scott Clendenning-Fenton: Scott is a scrum half who played in the junior teams of Canberra Raiders and will be our play maker. He is a great organiser and is a very tough defender for a little guy.

Nick vassallo: The oldest member of the new aussie recruits. Nick is a second rower with an extremely high work rate. Great defender.

Also coming into the squad from much closer to home....

Mark Hyslop: Mark plays for Coventry Tech during the winter, and has been the stand-out player during the pre-season friendlies. Mark is a is a full back, and even though he is new to the game of rugby league, his positioning and knowledge is already first class. He's a big lad who chimes into the backline and creates all sorts of trouble for the opposition's defence.

Lee Ashford: Lee is a prop who plays rugby union for Keresley. He is a no nonense font-rower who is a tough defender and is very hard to stop when he has the ball in hand. Also new to rugby league, but big things are expected from him.

2/5/05 - Result from Huddersfield - Huddersfield Underbank Rangers 22-44 Coventry Aquatics Bears. (Reports HERE).

1/5/04 - Result from Old Covents - Bears 'A' 54-18 St. Albans 'A' Report HERE

30/4/04 - Match Preview - vs Huddersfield 2/5/04, by Troy Perkins. The Coventry Bears head north on Sunday to play the LHF National 3 season opener against a very strong team in Huddersfield Underbank Rangers.

The team has a mix of new faces including Mark Hyslop who has impressed at fullback in the pre season friendlies, also the five new Australians we have signed in the off-season have been impressive in training and they are looking forward to being a part of the Bears set-up.

I'm also expecting big things from Lee Ashford who is playing only his fourth game of league on Sunday. He is a big strong lad and will be very effective coming off the interchange bench.

All the lads have trained well this week and are all looking forward to Sunday. Huddersfield will be a good side, however I have selected a big pack and we have some classy backs. As long as our forwards can lay a solid platform by gaining good metres, this will give our halves Clinton Scott-Knight and Scott Clendenning-Fenton the chance to create opportunities for our speed men out wide. I am confident of getting a win first-up as long as we stick to our game plan and our defence is rock solid.

Team: 1. Mark Hyslop 2. Dean Thompson 3. Adrian Veahmathau 4. John Fairhurst 5. Tom Shaw 6. Clinton Scott-Knight 7. Scott Clendenning-Fenton 8. Chris McBride 9. Alex Brown 10. Alan Robinson 11. Nick Vassallo 12. Matt Wright 13. Troy Perkins 14. Joe Smith 15. Tim Stevens 16. Lee Ashford 17. Ian Grimes

If you're looking for something a little closer to home, don't forget that the Bears also take on St. Albans at Old Coventrians' ground, Tile Hill Lane on Saturday 1st May (KO 2.30).

Season Launch 27/4/04

26/4/04 Press Release - Season Launch and New Sponsor News.

The Coventry Aquatics Bears Rugby League Club, the leading Rugby League side in the Midlands, are holding their 2004 season launch to mark the start of their LHF Healthcare National League Three campaign on Tuesday the 27th of April. The event is being held at Coventry’s premier pre-club venue (and associate sponsor of the Aquatics Bears), The Glasshouse Bar in the Bull Yard (024 7625 2255).

On the evening, the team will be presented with the new playing uniforms by Robin Hopkins of main sponsors Coventry Aquatics.  It will be a great opportunity for all fans and members of the press to meet the players and sponsors, as well as for potential sponsors to learn more about the club prior to the opening fixture away at Huddersfield-Underbank Rangers on Sunday 2nd May.

“This is a very exciting time for the Aquatics Bears” said club secretary Ron Banks. “We have secured an incredible three-year sponsorship package with Coventry Aquatics which we are thrilled about.  It will give us the kind of off-field platform that will give us the stability to make real progress on the field.  We have recruited well and retained our key players from the 2003 squad.  From a historical perspective this is a big year for rugby in the City, with the opening of the New Butts Park Stadium.  This breathtaking venue will host the NL3 side’s home fixtures during the summer and be the home to the city’s 15-a-side outfit in the winter.  This very ground was home to the professional Rugby League side in the city until the demise of the club in 1913, and it even hosted a match featuring the touring Australian side of 1910.  It's a dream come true for all at the club to be playing against such great Rugby League teams as Bramley and Carlisle in a national competition".  Banks went on to add that the Aquatics Bears will also be continuing to run a summer conference team, with home fixtures being played at Old Coventrians RFC.*"

In addition to the excellent deal with Coventry Aquatics, the club has managed to negotiate some fantastic backing from local businesses in and around the city.  This will see this season’s playing uniform feature not only the logo and Website of the club and Coventry Aquatics, but also the badges of Kendall Building Services from nearby Bedworth, and city-based kit manufacturers Flash Rugby UK*.

Head Coach Troy Perkins, who played in the Aussie NRL for St George Dragons and Penrith Panthers, as well as for Toulouse and UTC in France, has brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the club since his arrival in 2003 and is looking for an improved league placing for the Aquatics Bears this season.  Perkins said “We found last year to be a very tough learning curve; this was the first real opportunity that many of our players had ever had of playing regularly against strong sides from the traditional Rugby League areas.  We learnt some pretty tough lessons, and have worked hard in the off-season to put what we learnt into our football.  We will be a stronger, better drilled, and less naïve outfit in 2004.  A play-off place is a real possibility for us in our second season in this competition.”

The new kit designs are shown below, and these will be available to members of the public to buy shortly (prices to follow, please check back on this site at www.coventrybears.co.uk or www.coventrybears.org.uk regularly for updates).  The home shirt features the city’s traditional light blue colours, and the striking away shirt flashes of red on the torso and sleeves.

Come and join the 2004 squad on Tuesday for what promises to be a great night.

For further information on The Coventry Aquatics Bears please contact club captain Alan Robinson on 07974 517519.

Special thanks to Robin Hopkins and his team at Coventry Aquatics (www.covaquatics.co.uk), Phillip Kendall of Kendall Building Services (Bedworth), Steve Weeks of Flash Rugby UK of Coventry, Old Coventrians RFC for their assistance, and the continued support of Coventry RFC Chairman (and former professional RL player) Keith Fairbrother and his committee.

All fans, potential sponsors and all players etc. are invited to meet the new players and see the new kit unveiled as well as meet sponsors and have a few beers.

19/4/04 - Steelers withdraw from League. Teesside Steelers have withdrawn from National Division 3 competition - see HERE for further information.

No news yet on how this affects the Bears, or whether there is a club lined up to take over the Steelers' fixtures.

16/4/04 - Cov's trip to Thorne Moor for the RLC Cup semi against Gateshead has now been cancelled to enable the Bears to honour their long-standing commitment to Cardiff the following weekend. It was thought only fair to bow out at this stage rather than potentially reach the final only to be unable to compete.

15/4/04 a letter from Belgrade - Cov player-coach Troy Perkins is in Serbia at the moment doing good deeds - and undoubtedly enjoying life in the process. He sends this report (dated 10/4/04)...

Hi everyone,
I have been in Serbia for four days now and I'm having a great time. The people are very friendly and there is a lot of history to learn about in Belgrade. Everything is very cheap and the nitelife is sensational and the best thing is beers cost about 50 pence.
The rugby league coaching is going great, however they have very limited resources and in fact one team train on a public park where there is just a piece of grass a little smaller then a footy field and they don,t even have changing rooms. I laughed when one of the coaches arrived with a plastic bag with 4four balls in it and he was wearing a Newcastle Knights jersey from about 1990. That picure will stick in my memory for a long time.
Even with limited resources the boys love their footy and at the first session I took on Wednesday night there was 50 guys. It was a bit chaotic especially taking the session on my own. However I managed, just.

I also went to a high school where there were 40 kids and only one of the children had heard of rugby before and I'm sure this would have been Rugby Union. I did some passing drills with them and some picked it up fast and some even at the end of the session were doing basketball throws.
I met with the president of the Serbian Rugby league and he asked me if I would be their national coach and come to Serbia maybe once every 6 weeks if they can get my flights paid for by a sponsor and be involved when they play in the Mediterranean Cup in October.

The people running the rugby league are very enthusiastic and are doing a great deal of work to develop the game here.

In a few hours I am going to watch the first match of the season so it should be a great afternoon.
Troy

30/11/03 Featherstone Lions 60-21 Coventry Bears.

The Bears, severely weakened by several late player withdrawals - including South African international Tim O'Shea who sustained an injury on Saturday afternoon, went down to a very strong Featherstone side today. After a very competitive first half where the visitors had the edge until the dying seconds, Featherstone ran away with the game, but were ultimately flattered by the scoreline against the summer team. Report now online HERE.

To illustrate how the Bears played I thought I'd just reprint here what Bearman said on the Message Board:

Anyone looking at the scoreline would think we were hammered- We were not.
All the lads that played today did us proud and at half time we had them rattled going in just 6 points down. I was talking to Gary Hetherington at half time (Chief executive Leeds Rhino's) and he too was impressed at the Bears play.
We lost today because we are playing out of season- in future we need to get into the swing of things before the challenge cup starts.
Those words that the Featherstone management said about us were straight from the heart we really did impress them.
Andy the physio who we used today told me after the game that we would beat his side Eastmore Dragons and most other Pennine league teams. He said that Featherstone Lions are a really good team and not many teams would have put up such a good display.
That was the strongest team they have fielded this year- and we had them rocking and reeling.
Once again Thanks Lads

7/8/03 - Match Preview - Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks vs Coventry Bears, 9th August. Coventry Bears finish off their first season in National League 3 on Saturday with a visit to Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks. The first season has been very much a learning one for the Bears as they have ran into a number of experienced rugby league teams whose knowledge of the game has been too much for the still union orientated players of Coventry. The Bears have introduced a number of new players this year but this has often led to inconsistent performances as, unlike last year, a settled team and pattern of play has not been produced. Last weeks defeat at South London Storm means that Coventry are looking already to next season with experienced coach Troy Perkins already confirmed for next year and he hopes to have a bigger role on the field as well next year saying ‘I have enjoyed my time with Coventry Bears this year but my main regret is that I have been able only to play 2 games before picking up a knee injury. It frustrates me so much having to watch the guys from the sidelines. Next year I am looking forward to the challenge of playing more and coaching. We as a club intend to have a much more committed and professional outlook next year, particularly in the preparation for games.’ While the game on Saturday is only a matter of pride for the Bears it has real meaning for the home side as the Hawks need a win to secure there place in the end of season play-offs. The two sides fought out an exciting 32 all draw at Coundon Road only two rounds ago and if the game reaches those levels then it is sure to be a fine climax to the Bears National League 3 season. Coventry are again hit by the suspensions picked up earlier in the season which have all come into affect at the same time removing a number of experienced players. However the Bears do welcome back scrum half Joe Smith and full back Rich Pepperell who were both absent last week. Coventry Bears will be looking to finish the season on a high with a big performance at Sheffield to ensure a memorable end to an ultimately disappointing first season in the National Leagues. The kick off is earlier than normal at 1pm in Sheffield’s Hillsborough Arena.

5/8/03 - Apologies for the lack of service over the last few days. We've been having problems with our hosting, and for some strange reason, when I finally managed to get things back online the site had gone back to the 12th of June!

Don't ask me...

However, I have done everything I can to recover the site back up to date, but if you notice anything that was there, but isn't now, please let me know.

Anyway, the match report is now, finally, online HERE.

30/7/03 - Match Preview - South London Storm vs Coventry Bears, Saturday August 2nd. Coventry Bears' play-off hopes rest on the two fixtures they have remaining in National League 3, starting this week at South London Storm.

Despite picking up a point at home to Hillsborough Hawks last week the Bears did not gain much ground in the play-off race and sit a point outside the crucial top six positions. The importance of this Saturday’s game is further increased by the fact that South London Storm are one of the two teams sitting just that one point above the Bears. The two teams met at Coundon Road in only week three of the competition with Coventry coming out narrow 20 points to 14 winners in a closely fought contest.

South London are another team who, like the Bears, graduated from the Summer Conference this year into the National League 3 competition. The clubs are linked in that the Storm shared Coventry’s Grand Final glory at Cheltenham last year as they won the Shield competition and are regarded as one of the clubs with the best youth set-up in the south.

Coventry Bears will look to keep faith with many of the players who have performed well in difficult circumstances over the past couple of weeks against strong Northern opposition. Coventry welcome back leading try scorer John Fairhurst. but are without one of their most reliable players, Wales amateur international full back Rich Pepperell who is unavailable. The other concern for the Bears is that their earlier season disciplinary indiscretions have come back to hurt them as a number of lengthy suspensions to some key players start.

Coach Troy Perkins, who is still injured,  is optimistic heading into the weekend. "These last two games are really sudden death for us if we want to reach the play-offs, he said, which given the difficult first season we have had in National League 3 will be a decent achievement. We have produced two reasonable performances in the last two weeks but only picked up one point. We really need to make sure this week we come away with the win."

The Coventry Bears 'A' side move into the knock-out phase of the Summer Conference Shield this week with an away tie against old adversaries Rotherham Giants.

30/7/03 - Directions to South London RLFC for the 2.30 kick off at Streatham and Croydon RFC on Saturday. The address for the club is 159 Brigstock Road, Thornton Heath, Croydon, CR7 7JP

The best entrance to the ground is off Frant Road which is just off Brigstock Road. As you go down Frant Road from Brigstock road it is the first right.

26/7/03 - The Bears' last home ND3 match finished in a creditable 32-32 draw with Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks. The home side had the best of the first half, yet failed to really press home their advantage, turning round 20 points to 16 to the good.

It was a somewhat different story in the second period as the Hawks built a commanding lead. However, a strong final quarter fightback squared the scores, and a near miss by Alex van der Walt with a late drop-goal attempt nearly secured the win.

This was a much improved Bears side on display this afternoon, with the inexperienced lads in the squad fronting-up admirably under the influence of some excellent performances by the 'senior' players.

A very entertaining match for the spectators, but we're left to wonder just what might have been had the team managed to put a few more displays like this together.

Plenty to build on for the remaining away matches, starting with South London next weekend. Full report now online here.

3/6/03  Please note in your diary...The Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks fixtures have now been reversed. The home game will now be on 26th July, and the away match on the 9th August WITH A 1PM KICK-OFF. The Results page has been changed to reflect this.

Also, we have now had official confirmation that the Bedford club have withdrawn from the RLC competition, and therefore the 'A' team have blank Saturdays on the 14th June and 19th July.

27/5/03 Training has now moved to TUESDAY and THURSDAY evenings, starting at 7pm, at OLD COVENTRIANS RFC. Please note that attendance is vital on Tuesdays as squads will be announced that night to allow for Match Programme preparation and publication in the Coventry Evening Telegraph on Friday. Any apologies should be addressed to Matt Allsopp on 07973 200654.

24/7/03 - Match Preview - Coventry vs Sheffield Hillsorough Hawks, Coundon Road, 26th July. Coventry Bears face another challenge from the north in their final National League 3 home game of the season at Coundon Road on Saturday.

Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks are experienced in the national winter leagues and are successfully adapting to the summer competition. They feature a number of experienced players who have played at various professional levels, including Bright Sodje, who has featured for a number of Super League Clubs including Sheffield Eagles and Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.

The Hawks are the only side to have beaten league leaders Bradford Dudley Hill so far this season, the side to whom the Bears lost last week by 40 points to 8. Despite good recent form Sheffield are still only just in the play-off places, sitting in fifth, two points above the Bears who currently lie seventh. The play-offs will feature the top six sides so this week’s clash is vital for the Bears if they hope to contest the end of season knockout rounds. The Bears still have every chance as they face the Hawks again away after Saturday’s home game and sixth place South London Storm once before the end of the season, so Coventry’s fate is certainly in their own hands.

Again Coventry’s spate of unavailable and injured players continues so much of the inexperienced side who travelled to Dudley Hill last week and performed bravely in defeat will continue in action this week. One notable absentee from last week’s side will be centre John Fairhurst who is the team’s top scorer, and his experience will be missed in the back line.

Joe Smith again stands in as skipper and said "For the second week in a row we will be looking for a number of inexperienced players to produce big performances against a good quality northern side. All the players managed to raise their game in defeat last week, particularly in the second half, so we know we have to perform even better this week if we are going to get the win."

Coventry are sure to give it all in this game and for the remainder of the season in order to gain at least a further two wins which Coach Troy Perkins hopes should secure a play-off spot - "Because there are so many teams around the cut off point for the play offs taking wins off our fellow contenders could be crucial. All three games we have left are with teams who are fighting, like us, for those fifth and sixth positions so wins against them will hurt their chances as well as boosting ours. Sheffield on Saturday is the start of a run of ‘must-win’ games for us, and I’m looking to the lads to rise to the challenge".

The game kicks off at 2.30pm on Saturday at Coventry RFC, Coundon Road. Admission is £3 for adults and free for under 16s (programme included).

21/7/03 - Pride in Northern defeat for depleted Bears. Report HERE.

17/7/03 - Match Preview - Bradford Dudley Hill vs Coventry Bears, (19/7/03) Coventry Bears face one of their toughest challenges so far this season as they travel to National League 3 leaders Bradford Dudley Hill on Saturday. Dudley Hill were victorious in the corresponding encounter at Coundon Road in June - an early blast of four tries meaning the Bears were unlikely ever to win. However, the rest of the game was much more finely balanced, with the Bears having the upper hand in the second period.

Dudley Hill were unbeaten at that stage of the season and only lost that record last week to Yorkshire neighbours Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks, so Coventry will have to be wary of a potential backlash. Coventry also suffered defeat last week at home to Huddersfield side Underbank Rangers which dented the Bears’ play-off hopes.

The race for the remaining couple of play off places would seem now to be a five way scrap between Sheffield Hillsborough, Underbank, South London, Manchester and the Bears themselves. Coventry still face away fixtures at South London and Sheffield and a Coundon Road return versus Sheffield, so a place in the top six and knockout football is in the hands of the Bears themselves.

The challenge at Bradford this week will not be helped by the number of players not making the trip for various reasons, including skipper Matt Allsopp and influential loose forward Rob Lowe. The remaining experienced players will be expected to pick up the responsibility to ensure the Bears put in a good performance against the northern side in the rugby league heartland.

The pack will look towards Ireland international Alan Robinson, Wales Amateur international Richard Davies and the ever dangerous John Nicholls to give the team forward impetus. Behind the scrum, stand-in skipper Joe Smith, the experienced John Fairhurst and Wales Amateur international Rich Pepperell will be looking to create chances and tries for, amongst others, flying winger Francis Slater.

Around these players Coventry will be looking for some newer and less experienced lads to step up and produce performances which show they deserve to keep their places in the team ahead of the unavailable players.

The Coventry Bears side that travels will no doubt not be lacking in pride and commitment and will endeavour to cause a big upset against the league leaders.

13/7/03 Despite leading at half time with a scoreline that didn't quite do justice to their early endeavours, the Bears eventually went down by 30 points to 24 at tropical Coundon Road yesterday. The now customary sending-off probably made no impact on the final score as both sides suffered equally in this respect. However the home side somehow contrived to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory with some inexplicable decisions and stray passing when laying seige to the 'bank line.

The learning curve may be steep in the National Divisions, but I can't help thinking that had this match been played twelve months ago this would have been a very different result.

Call it a 'bedding-in' season if you will.

6/7/03 The Bears ran out comfortable 48-14 winners at Coundon Road yesterday, completing a season double over last year's semi-final opponents Hemel Stags (see the 'Reports' page.

However, the 'A' side went down 28-40  to an experienced Leicester Phoenix at Old Covents.

4/7/03 Preview - Coventry Bears v Hemel Stags  (at Coventry RFC, Coundon Road 5/7/03). Coventry Bears look to complete their first double of the season as they welcome Hemel Stags to Coundon Road on Saturday.

The Bears won the corresponding fixture at Hemel earlier in the season by 19 points to 4 so the Stags will be looking to avenge that defeat. Coventry and Hemel share a similar history as they met in last year’s Rugby League Conference Grand Final won by the Bears, but both sides are struggling to cope with life in the National League 3 this year. Hemel are so far winless and Coventry’s form has been very mixed with them surprisingly struggling at home having lost the previous two home fixtures at Coundon Road.

The main focus this week for Coventry will be to reinstate the home they share with Coventry Rugby Union club as a tough place for visiting clubs to come.

The other area for improvement will be the Bears discipline with five red cards already received this season. Captain Matt Allsopp said "this is obviously an area for concern as it is costing us games now as you can only play short handed for so long against sides of good quality. As a knock-on effect the players will also probably have to serve suspensions at some time, which along with our injuries will stretch the club's playing resources".

One positive from last week’s defeat at the hands of league leaders Bradford Dudley Hill was the return to action of Dan Price - an integral figure in the club's early days. Dan's presence can only benefit the side. Ian Grimes also returns to the side in place of Australian Matt Wright who is making a visit back home.

Entrance to the game is £3 for adults and free for under 16s and includes a matchday programme.

Team: 1. Rich Pepperell 2. Francis Slater 3. Dan Price 4. John Fairhurst 5. Luke Talbot 6. Alex van der Walt 7. Alex Brown 8. Rich Davies 9. Matty Allsopp 10. Carl Southwell 11. Al Robinson 12. John Nicholls 13. Bob Lowe 14. Ken Dowding 15. Joe Smith 16. Ian Grimes 17. Neil Saunders

Coventry Bears' A side are also at home against Leicester Phoenix. The game will be played at Old Coventrians RFC, kicking off at 2.30pm

28/6/03 On an afternoon when little went right for the Bears, Bradford Dudley Hill showed their rugby pedigree and ran out winners by 36 points to 18. Those who witnessed the first quarter however will probably feel that it was an acceptable scoreline after watching the Yorkshiremen race into a 24-0 lead with hardly a home hand touching the ball. At this point some on the terraces were bracing themselves for a record defeat. However, the depleted Bears team somehow reached into the depths of their reserves and - even though down to 11 and 12 men for long periods of the match - somehow managed to reach half-time without further points being shipped. Indeed, the home team managed to conjure an unlikely 'win' in the second period with three decent tries - all converted. Great character under chin-dropping circumstances.

bdh0341.JPG (163928 bytes) Click to expand

Given a little more discipline and a lot more luck with injuries this side could finish fairly strongly and a place in the top half is not out of the question - but they are big ifs at the moment.

26/6/03 Preview - Coventry Bears v Bradford Dudley Hill  (at Coventry RFC, Coundon Road 28/6/03). Coventry Bears begin a run of three home games on Saturday at Coundon Road - and  the opposition could not be any tougher. The visitors Bradford Dudley Hill are an experienced rugby league club with many seasons in the top divisions of the winter’s premier competition the National Conference behind them. The switch to summer rugby league has done them no harm either and they are the only side left to have won every game so far in National League 3, so they sit clearly at the top of the table. The addition of Bradford to the original Dudley Hill club name reflects the wider area they are now drawing players from and the support they have from the whole of the city in the northern heartlands of the game.

The Bears however will certainly be looking to rise to the challenge, particularly on their home pitch. Again the unavailability of players due to injury means changes within the side as the Bears still wait to find a settled look to their line-up. There is good news, particularly for the recently overstretched forwards, with the return of Carl Southwell to add further power to pack. Matt Allsopp also returns to both the key roles of hooker and captain after a weeks absence, and will be very keen to lead his side effectively in both capacities. The returning skipper said ‘the side that travelled last week performed well in difficult circumstances at St. Albans and the performances of a number of debutants means that places are keenly contested for this game. This week’s game is the kind of fixture that players relish, facing experienced rugby league players and testing yourselves against the best players in the division. I have no doubt that we will meet Dudley Hill head on and give a good account of ourselves. This game will be one of the highest profile games of rugby league ever played in Coventry and will certainly be a great occasion for supporters who have been before and for anyone wanting to watch their first game of league.’  In the backs Luke Talbot returns to action after injury and he will be looking for tries from the wing in an experienced back line. Coventry still await the return to action of experienced Australian forward Troy Perkins from a knee injury, although it is hoped that he will be back playing very soon. Admission to Saturday’s game which kicks off at 2.30pm is £3 for adults (including programme) and free for under 16s.

Coventry Bears 'A' team are also in action this weekend looking for a double at the Telford Raiders who they defeated 34 – 28 in the home fixture. The side should feature a number of players who have gained valuable first team experience in the past few weeks and this should give them an added edge as they compete to regain those places.

The team meet at Coundon Road at 11.30am

14/6/03 Things on the up? For the first time ever, both Coventry Bears teams recorded wins on the same day. The first team travelled to Hemel and defeated last year's Grand Final opponents by 19 points to four, while the 'A' side took revenge-with-interest over Wolverhampton - the scoreline of 46-22 more than making up for the narrow opening-day defeat. 19/6/03 St Albans Centurions v. Coventry Bears Match Preview (Saturday 21st June).  Coventry Bears go on a revenge mission this week to St Albans in National League 3. The Centurions sent Coventry to a heavy home defeat at Coundon Road just three weeks ago and the Bears are looking to turn the tables in this return fixture. Again the Bears are suffering from a number of injuries and unavailabilities for the trip and the side will feature a new look from last week’s win at Hemel Stags. Experienced Australian forward Troy Perkins is still out with a knee injury while last week’s centre partners Alex Nash and John Fairhurst are both also missing this week, as is prop forward Carl Southwell. Coventry will be looking for a number of players to come into the team, step up to the challenge and take regular places in the first team squad. Captain Matt Allsopp reinforced this, “this is a big chance for the players who come in to make an impact and take the places of people who are unavailable. Last week’s good win by the ‘A’ side means that there is competition for places. It is in this sort of game that people have to stand up and be counted in order for us to get a result.” The Bears do however welcome back one of the previous season’s outstanding performers, John Nicholls, who will certainly add a dangerous presence in the forwards.

The Bears 'A' side do not have a fixture this week as it is a rest week in the Rugby League Conference.

12/6/03 This Saturday's Matches...

Hemel vs Bears: Coventry Bears aim to get their season back on track as they travel to Hemel Stags this week. Saturday’s opponents hold good memories for the Bears as they were the side that were beaten in last season’s Grand Final victory. Coventry beat the Stags by 31 points to 18 in that final at Cheltenham but would settle for any margin of victory in this game. Both finalists have so far disappointed in the step up to National League 3 this year with Hemel yet to record a win and the Bears also struggling to repeat last years achievements. The Bears are still suffering after last weeks defeat at Teesside with the number of injuries picked up there. Influential Australian Troy Perkins is suffering from a knee injury and is a very doubtful starter as is his fellow countryman Adam Lindsay. There is good news for Coventry however, with the return of Carl Southwell and Ian McGregor to boost the stretched forwards and Wales Amateur International Rich Pepperell at full back. The wait on the fitness of a number of players means the full team will not be announced until the morning of the game.

Bears 'A' vs Wolverhampton: The Coventry ‘A’ side return to RLC action after their enforced week off due to the withdrawal of Bedford. They face Wolverhampton Wizards, who they lost very narrowly to in their first match of the season, at Old Coventrians RFC, 2.30pm kick off. (No team list available at time of writing).

28/5/03 Coventry Bears welcome St Albans Centurions  this Saturday (kick off 2:30pm) for the fourth round of the National Division Three Championship. The Bears are looking to build on their last home victory, which will not be an easy task as the Centurions are also approaching this weekend's clash on the back of a victory. The Bears have a significantly different squad to the last home win; Francis Slater will be repositioned to full back for the unavailable Richard Pepperell, and Alex van der Walt is back from injury to play in the centres replacing John Fairhurst who is also unavailable. Carl Southwell and Dave Campton return to the squad from their Warwickshire County RU duties. They will be warmly welcomed as Ian McGregor is still out with his injured knee. Coventry Bears extend a warm welcome to debutant Troy Perkins this Saturday. Troy the big Australian second rower arrived from France just in time to witness the second half of the last home victory against South London Storm and is fully fit and raring to go.

Coventry Team: 1. Francis Slater;  2. Alex Nash;  3. Bob Lowe;  4. Alex van der Walt; 5. Luke Talbot;  6.Joe Smith; 7. Alex Brown; 8. Rich Davies;  9. Matt Allsopp (c);  10. Alan Robinson;  11. Tim Stevens;  12. Ian Grimes; 13. Troy Perkins;  14. Scott Carver;  15. Adam Lindsay;  16. Carl Southwell;  17. Dave Campton.

Following this weekend the Bears face three difficult weeks of away games at Teesside, Hemel and St Albans, all of which  will facilitate transportation, and spectators are welcome to join the Bears on the team coach.

The RLC team travel to Walsall to face Birmingham Bulldogs. The Bulldogs are unbeaten this season and will want to confirm their top of the table spot. With the Nat 3 team welcoming back some of the union boys the TLC team will be strengthened as a result. Captain Craig (Poppy) Lee is able to call on Ben Hands on the wing. His brother Charlie is hoping to have recovered and will be looking to help the A’s get their first away win of the season. Poppy said “They will be confident after the run of results they have had but we hope to spring a surprise on them."

Match Preview; Teesside vs Coventry Coventry Bears face their longest journey of the season on Saturday as they travel to face the Teesside Steelers. The fixture brings bitter memories back for the Bears who lost to the Steelers in their first Grand Final in 2001. The game was only settled in the final minutes with a late try giving Teesside a two point victory, and Saturday's fixture should be equally close. Captain Matt Allsopp said "There are a number of lads who played in that final in Saturday's side and I know that like me they have a point to prove to the Steelers and want to gain some revenge for that loss in the Grand Final."

The Bears are looking to bounce back from last week's disappointing performance against St Albans and a much improved positive attitude has been evident in training this week. A reshuffle in the back line sees an experienced centre partnership of John Fairhurst and Rob Lowe lining up outside South African stand off Alex van der Walt and Coventry University student Clement Muchiti stepping up onto the wing. The forwards see only one change with Tim Stevens swapping to the bench for fired-up Australian Adam Lindsay. Dave Schindler is promoted to the bench from the 'A' side following a number of consistent performances. Following his debut last week the experienced Troy Perkins will again set the standard for the Bears from loose forward.

Against the so-far-unbeaten Steelers, Coventry will be looking to be boosted by support from the Rugby League Conference squad members who are left without a game following Bedford's withdrawal from their division. They along with any other supporters are encouraged and welcome to travel on the team coach leaving Coventry RFC, Coundon Road at 8 am on Saturday (£10).

And a bit of good news - we have been informed that Coundon Road will now be available for the whole season for all ND3 matches

17/5/03 Match results were a mixed bag yet again today. The NL3 clash  finished in a win for the Bears, who started slowly, going behind to an unconverted Souths  try. The team settled however, and turned it round to a 20-4 lead, only to come under sustained late pressure that might have stolen it from them

.slon03h01.JPG (293460 bytes)

The 'A' side, undoubtedly suffering badly from the knock-on effects of player unavailability, went down 48-8 at Leicester.

New Aussie signing Troy Perkins watched from the Coundon Road stand and will undoubtedly be itching to pull on the shirt in a couple of weeks time, adding to Mirf's dilemma when he suddenly has a surfeit of players to pick from for the first time this season. No doubt both teams will benefit greatly...

15/5/03 Match Previews - South London Storm (NLD3) & Leicester Phoenix (Totalrl.com RLC)

As the third round of the National Three and Rugby League Conference competition approaches the Bears have their first injury crisis with a number of key players out. The Bears have added Ian McGregor to the injury list and he joins  Matt Wright and Alex Van Der Walt (Hand), Tom Shaw (Ankle), Andy Whitehall (Knee). Joe Smith could also be added if he fails a late fitness test on Saturday. However the Bears are still able to field two strong sides who are both looking for their second win of the season.

The National Three side has a difficult home tie with South London Storm who were entered into the league at the last minute, but have already managed to take the scalp of pre-season favourites Huddersfield on the opening weekend of the competition. Mirf has named an unchanged first seventeen, with the only doubt being over Joe Smith. The ever present scrum half badly damaged his shoulder in last weekend's defeat to Manchester but is looking hopeful for Saturday. Mirf said "We have a good threequarter line up and there seems little point in changing things. As long as we can ensure they get more ball than they got last week we should have a strong chance of scoring a good few points". The Forwards have changed with Scott Carver starting his first game of the season at prop and Tim Stevens and Alan Robinson both dropping into the second row, while Rich Davies (prop), Matty Allsopp (hooker) and Rob Lowe (loose forward) all keep their places. The bench has a new face as Will Tunicliffe is promoted into the National Three team after a good kicking performance against Telford last week, and Alex Nash is welcomed back after a break following a nasty ear injury. Liam McGar keeps his place while Ian Grimes is listed at 17.

Club Captain Alan Robinson said "The squad is still short of probably 10 players from which we'd like to select, but we are only two weeks away from the full players' register being available and I feel sorry for Mirf as he'll have some tough decisions to make." Kick off for the National 3 game is 2.30 at Coundon road and spectators are welcome.

Team: 1. Rich Pepperell 2. Francis Slater 3. Luke Talbot 4. Jonny Fairhurst 5. Ben Hands 6. Alex Brown 7. Joe Smith 8. Rich Davies 9. Matty Allsopp (c) 10. Scot Carver 11. Alan Robinson 12. Tim Stevens 13. Rob Lowe 14. Liam McGar 15. Will Tunicliffe 16. Alex Nash 17. Ian Grimes

The RLC team travel to Leicester to take on a team lacking consistency. Following last week's narrow win over the Telford Raiders they are in buoyant mood and are confident that they will put on a good display against the team who ended up runners up in the group to Coventry last season. Craig Lee captains the side again after a stint in the National 3 team last week. Following training today he said "We are a little uncertain of the final 17 at the moment; we definitely have a decent squad and we are just awaiting confirmation of a few players' availability following treatment on the physio table." The coach added "We have a lot of raw talent and today's session has gone very well. We are training the lads to play in a Rugby League style and they are picking it up very quickly. Hopefully they'll do us proud against the Leicester team. They certainly have the hunger to learn and win, but we must remember the Phoenix team are experienced and understand the game, so we will be relying on our experienced guys, Craig Lee and David Schindler to lead the way."

Leicester play at South Leicester RFC, Welford Road, Wigston, Leics (0116-2882066).

From the M69, head east on A563 ring road towards Oadby & Wigston. Take a right at the signpost to Northampton (A5199) and go to the second roundabout. Ground is on right near Wigston  cemetery.

3/5/03 Historic win for Bears. Coventry Bears today opened their account in National Division with a hard-fought win over a very committed and skilful Warrington Woolston Rovers. Everyone knew the step-up to the mainstream of the Rugby League hierarchy was going to be hard and, equally, nobody knew whether this was going to be a badly unbalanced fixture, with a Midlands Summer team taking on a Northern BARLA Premiership outfit for the first time ever.

However  the Bears, minus several players who were involved with matches elsewhere, proved to be equal to the task, running out 16-13 winners. Report to follow.

Not such good news from across the West Midlands where the Bears Totalrl.com Summer Conference  team went down to Wolverhampton Wizards in what sounds like a see-saw game with Wizards getting a late winner. Confidence is very high, however, that improvements will be made in short order to get the season quickly back on track.

2/5/03 Mirf's Preview. As Saturday the 3rd May is fast approaching the preparation within the Coventry Bears side is going well for their inaugural game in the newly-formed Rugby Football League National Division 3 and also in their defence of the TotalRL.com Rugby league Conference. For the first time in their short history they are to put out two sides in competitions running concurrently.
The excitement in the camp is summed up by the new Bears National 3 captain Matty Allsopp who said "The lads can't wait to get out on the pitch on Saturday. Many of us have been waiting since last September to play and we are really excited about the prospect of having two excellent teams out".
The Bears are playing out of Coundon Road for their National 3 fixtures and Old Coventrians on Tile Hill Road for their RLC games. At the moment the training squad  regularly numbers in the 30s and with the end of the union season this number is rising weekly. The turnout at training is fantastic and every week we are picking up returning players and even more excitingly new players. The great thing this year is that we can give twice the amount of players a run out compared to last season and yet this year I have more selection headaches than last year.
The amount of interest in the Bears and Rugby league is growing each week and it means we can put out two first rate teams.
The first two squads of the season have been selected and the National 3 side has an air of familiarity about it with ten of last year's triumphant RLC championship winning side playing, but there are new faces in the shape of Jonny Fairhurst and Alex Nash at Centres. Fairhurst, a former GB Amateur International is in his first season with the Bears and adds a great deal of experience to the back line. Nash is new to the game of League, but brings a fearsome tackling reputation and great reading of the game. Other players getting a run out include England Students International Alex Brown, who narrowly missed out playing in last years grand final team and Tom Shaw who missed the end of last season due to an injury. Rich Draper at 39 is the oldest member of the National 3 squad but is arguably the fittest.
Of the 'Old Guard' the ones to look out for are Joe Smith at scrum half who was instrumental last year, Alan Robinson who is getting back to full fitness and looking awesome, Rob Lowe who reverts back to his favoured role in the pack after playing out the end of last season in the centres and
Matty Allsopp who is being given the captain's armband for the first time.
The National 3 team are playing Warrington Woolston Rovers at Coundon road in what promises to be a mammoth battle. Woolston currently play in the top amateur flight in the North of England and will be experiencing their first taste of summer rugby; they have an experienced and seasoned squad and will probably prove to be one of the Bears' toughest opponents this year. Many people expect Woolston come down and have an easy ride in a non-traditional area for Rugby League, but we have done our homework and while I don't want to make a call on who will win or lose, I will say that we will come away with our heads held high and safe in the knowledge that Woolston will be going home knowing they have been in a tough game. For many of the seasoned fans the tone for the season is likely to be set by this game. It will be the first time a Northern team has played a midlands team in a national league and it is likely to show us what the gap is, if any!

ND3 Squad: 1) Rich Pepperell,   2) Tom Shaw,  3) Alex Nash,  4) Jonny Fairhurst,  5) Francis Slater,  6) Alex Brown,  7) Joe Smith,  8) Rich Davies,  9) Matty Allsopp (c),  10) Alan Robinson,  11) Ian McGregor,  12) Jonny Nicholls,  13) Rob Lowe,  14) Richard Draper,  15) Liam McGar,  16) Tim Stevens,  17) Luke Talbot

The Rugby League Conference side has a good blend of experience and new talent as they travel to Wolverhampton to take on the Wizards in the opening game of their campaign. Leading from the front is Captain Craig Lee, who was undoubtedly one of the most improved players last season and beside him in the second row is Ian Grimes who has a wealth of student representative honours. Returning from injury, Alex van der Walt will test out his injured hands before hopefully returning to National 3 duty next week. With Alex at stand off the new talent in the back line is bound to receive good ball and should work well.
The new faces who have impressed In the pre-season cup competition are the likes of Ben and Charlie Hands, both Warwickshire colts with bags of potential, and they are joined by new signing Will Gilberts who joins John Finn to give an impressive back line.
Wolverhampton came bottom in last years midlands regional phase of the competition, but have had a couple of good results lately and are looking on good form going into Saturdays clash, but the bears are extremely confident.

"We have a great RLC team, with some excellent new talent and I wouldn't be at all surprised if half of this team played in the National 3 at some time this season", said RLC Team Captain Craig Lee.

RLC Squad: 1) Will Tunicliffe,  2) Ben Hands,  3) Charlie Hands,  4) John Finn,  5) Will Gilbert, 6) Alex van der Walt,  7),  TBC,  8) Jason Whetton,  9) Dave Schindler,  10) Nigel Kane, 11) Craig Lee (c),  12) Ian Grimes,  13) Chris Allsopp 14), Michael Greavy,  15) Jim Magnon,  16) Rich Chapell, 17) Nathan Harrison

National 3 is the start-point on the ladder to the Superleague, three levels up. It's a tough road, but not insurmountable. Can top level Rugby League be brought to the Midlands? Keep watching..

27.1.03 Rugby League Conference National Champions Coventry Bears are embarking on a new era in the club’s history, and from the start of the 2003 season the Bears will be running four teams.

The highest profile of these is the team which has gained entry into the newly formed ‘National League Division 3’ which lies just beneath the professional ranks of the game’s Tetley’s Super League and National 1&2 divisions. The Bears also maintain their Rugby League Conference spot in the North Midlands Division with an ‘A’ team. Newly formed U16 and U13 teams serve to underline the club’s intent in developing the game of rugby league at the grass roots level within the city.

Club captain Alan Robinson said; “This is a huge boost for the sport in the Midlands. Being a summer sport we can really raise our profile within the city of Coventry as well as giving players and supporters the opportunity to try rugby league at all levels”.

We are seeking players for Open Age/U16/U13 levels as well as volunteers and helpers who may wish to join the clubs staff and administration.

So if you want to just give the sport a try or indeed test yourself at the highest level then come along and get involved. To launch the new season the Coventry Bears will be holding the following 3 key events:

Open Night (Coventry RFC, Coundon Rd) Sunday 16th February at 7.00pm.

Training will commence Wednesday 19th February from 6.30pm. (Coventry RFC, Coundon Rd - Open Age).

Launch ‘Party’ at Old Wheats, Spon Street, Coventry,  Saturday 22nd February. (7.30pm).

9.1.03 THE RFL have confirmed the make-up of the new National League Three and the Summer Conference.
The 10-team Nat. 3 competition kicks off on May 3rd 2003 and its introduction means that elite level club Rugby League has reached an unprecedented level of national expansion.
The member clubs are (in alphabetical order):

Bradford Dudley Hill
Coventry Bears
Crawley Jets
Hemel Hempstead Stags
Huddersfield Underbank Rangers
Manchester Knights
Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks
St Albans Centurions
Teesside Steelers
Warrington Woolston Rovers

The 10 clubs have all been admitted to the new competition after successfully coming through a rigorous application procedure.
National League Three becomes the fourth tier of the domestic club game beneath National League Two, National League One and the elite Tetley’s Super League.
Bradford-Dudley Hill, Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks and Warrington Woolston Rovers have previously played in the British Amateur Rugby League’s (BARLA) National Conference (they will continue to field teams in these competitions).
Huddersfield Underbank Rangers have fielded teams in BARLA’s Pennine League (they will also continue to field a team at this level).
Of the other member clubs, Crawley Jets, Teesside Steelers, St Albans Centurions and Manchester Knights began as members of the Rugby League Conference (RLC) and their fellow National League Three member Coventry Bears are currently reining champions of that competition.
The Hemel Hempstead club were among the inaugural members of the London Amateur Rugby League. They have played in a variety of competitions including the RLC since their inception.
Throughout their existence all the 10 clubs have played major roles in developing Rugby League within their own communities.
In the same way as National Leagues One and Two, National League Three will climax with a six team play-off series and Grand Final. A full fixture list will be released in due course.
Commenting on today’s announcement, Executive Chairman of the Rugby Football League (RFL) Richard Lewis said: “We are delighted to be able to confirm the line up of National League Three. The introduction of this competition means that Rugby League’s national spread has reached an unprecedented level.
“National League Three is a key element of the RFL’s drive to expand and develop Rugby League throughout the country and we welcome the new towns and cities which have today become part of our national club structure.”
“Each of the 10 League members have shown a strong desire to compete at this level and we are sure they will all contribute to what will be an exciting season."

Fifty two clubs will be competing in the 2003 Rugby League Conference season, including the Bears 'A' side.
The competing sides will be split as follows with six of the divisions containing six clubs and two having eight.
EAST - Cambridge Eagles, Essex, Ipswich Rhinos, Luton Vipers, Saint Ives, South Norfolk Saints.
LONDON & THE SOUTH - Crawley Jets 'A', Greenwich Admirals, Gosport Vikings, Hemel Stags 'A', Kingston Warriors, North London Skolars 'A', South London Storm, West London Sharks
NORTH EAST - Bridlington Bulls, Durham Tigers, Gateshead Storm, Newcastle Knights, North Leeds Akademiks, Scarborough, Sunderland City, Whitley Bay Barbarians.
NORTH MIDLANDS - Crewe Wolves, Derby City, Mansfield Storm, Nottingham City, Rotherham Giants, Worksop Sharks

SOUTH MIDLANDS - Bedford Swifts, Birmingham Bulldogs, Coventry Bears 'A', Leicester Phoenix, Telford Raiders, Wolverhampton Wizards.
SOUTH WEST - Bristol Sonics, Cardiff Demons, Gloucestershire Warriors, Oxford Cavaliers, Somerset Vikings, Worcestershire Saints.
WALES - Aberavon Fighting Irish, Bridgend Sports, Cynon Valley Cougars, Rumney Rhinos, Swansea Bulls, final side to be confirmed.

Bears have gained new fixtures against start-up club Telford, and Bedford in the newly constituted South Midlands league. However,  the fixture against Nottingham has been lost as the Outlaws 'move' into the North Midlands.
