16.12.02 Saturday saw the Coventry Bears make local history by being the first Rugby league side from Coventry in 80 years to play in the TXU Energy Challenge Cup, and whilst the result went again them they did the name of Rugby League in Coventry proud. East Hull entered the match having played in the Yorkshire Premier division for the last three months and having lost none of their previous ten encounters this season, standing top of the league with a defensive record which has seen them concede only 12 points in their previous five encounters. The Bears on the other hand had not played together since their victory in the Rugby League Conference Grand Final on September 8th - and so went into the game as underdogs.

The first half saw the East Hull side dominate play, as their carefully practiced moves saw them score six unanswered tries to only one penalty goal for the Bears side. The Coventry side looked rusty and clearly had not shaken the journey as they made simple mistakes which made  the Yorkshire side look even better than they were. The second half was a different story as the Bears were unfortunate not to score on two occasions before Dave Campton, playing on the wing, ran a try in from 60 yards that made the 21 year old the only Coventry player to score a try in the Challenge Cup. East Hull managed three tries in the second half, but the Bears fared a lot better and at the end of the game many of the East Hull players and committee members were heard to comment on how much better than they expected the Coventry side were. The final score was 48 - 8 and the Coventry Bears' Challenge Cup dreams were ended.

Whilst the game ended in a loss, the important thing is that the Bears learn from the game. There were a number of areas were the Bears have to work on and it also provided them with a bench mark to aim for in the coming season. East Hull had an excellent side with twelve of the squad having played professionally over the last couple of years and being coached by a current Bradford Bulls professional certainly helped their cause. However the two teams have agreed to a friendly fixture in the late summer at Coventry and hopefully the Bears can get their form back and prove that they can mix it with the best the North has to offer.

Stephen Harrison-Mirfield

12.12.02 The Bears team for Saturday is:  1. Rich Pepperell 2. Francis Slater 3. Steve Campton 4. Rob Lowe (c)

5. Dave Campton 6. Joe Smith 7. Alex Brown 8. Alan Robinson 9. Matthew Allsopp 10. Rich Davies 11. Mark Flannery

12. Adam Lindsay 13. Matt Wright 14. Craig Lee 15. Tim Stevens 16. Rich Draper 17. Scott Carver

A few comments by Coach Stephen Harrison-Mirfield:
We are exceptionally excited about playing in the second round of the TXU Energy Challenge Cup, especially after the disappointment of Newcastle calling the first round game off at the last minute.

For many of the players it will be the highlight of their year, if not career, and training could not have gone better. We have had to make a few changes due to player commitments, but I think the team we have been able to field has plenty of strength and will be capable of ensuring the Coventry Bears give a fantastic account of themselves against an East Hull team who believe they have won the fixture already.
East Hull definitely go in as favourites on Saturday, but this suits the Bears down to the ground. We go there with absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain, East Hull on the other hand have the exact opposite, if they beat us then nobody will praise them as they are expected to do so, but if they lose then they will have egg on their face after all the hype they have created.
A couple of players to watch for this weekend are Joe Smith and Adam Lindsay.

Joe has moved to the stand-off role and will have more freedom to operate, while Adam makes a welcome return after a season out. The Australian is looking forward to putting some of the northern knockers of the game in the south right on a few things.

Also expect big games from the usual suspects in Matt ‘Salty’ Wright, Alan ‘Boomer’ Robinson, Rob Lowe, Matty Allsopp and Steve Campton. Make no mistake this match is going to be a real humdinger.
The Bears will be travelling to Hull on a coach leaving The Coundon public house at 8.00am on Saturday and any supporter wishing to travel with them is more than welcome. There will be a small charge to cover expenses, but it will be more than worth it to see the Coventry Bears try to make history by reaching the 3rd round.

28.11.02 Team Selection for Saturday. The Bears are hoping to see as many supporters in the cowshed as possible on Saturday.
The team is a strong one given that a few lads are not available due to union (and honeymoon!) commitments, and there are a few faces that will be familiar to Cov Union fans. Francis Slater and Alan Robinson were on the Cov RU club's books a few years ago, and of course it's a chance for them to see Dave Campton and Carl Southwell strut their stuff in the 13 man code. Unfortunately amongst the 'unavailables' are Jon Nicholls, Alex van der Walt, Wayne Box, Glen Southwell and Jimmy Cathcart or there'd have been a real Cov RU feel about the team.
Other players for them to keep an eye on include mercurial young half-back Joe Smith and ex Rochdale Hornets powerhouse Rob Lowe in the centre. Dave's brother Steve Campton (13 tries from 8 games in the 2002 summer season) starts on the wing and Welsh Amateur internationals Rich Pepperell and Chunky Davies also figure in the line-up along with Aussies Adam Lindsay and Matt Wright and uncompromising forwards Scott Carver and Matty Allsopp.
'Poppy' Lee comes into the side on the wing after winning this year's 'Clubman of the Year' award recently, and the squad of 17 is completed by winger-cum-halfback Andy Lewis, tough-tackling Rich Draper, and Ian Grimes.
All in, it promises to be a great match. Please come along and cheer the RL Conference Champs (Coventry's most successful sporting side of recent years) into the second stage of 'The Road to Cardiff'.
Admission £2, Programme £1 (including raffle entry), bar open, kick-off 3pm.

The Coach's View (Stephen Harrison-Mirfield)

When I started playing Rugby League in 1979 I did not particularly follow any team, but I had heard of the challenge cup and I remember the trips down to Wembley on the coach to watch the final starting out at 5am in the morning to make sure we got there in good time to get a parking place and have enough time to soak up the pre-match atmosphere.

My first final was Featherstone Rovers v Hull FC in 1981 and ever since that first trip to Wembley I have been enthralled by the competition. For me it is the premier Rugby League competition in the world. The Aussies and Kiwis all want to play in it and many players would take a Challenge Cup winners medal over a Grand Final ring.

So for me now to have an opportunity to take part in the competition it is truly a dream come true. This year has been the Rugby League year of my life, a RLC Grand Final win, the Coach of the Year accolade and now to lead the team into their first ever foray into the Challenge Cup has just been fantastic.

But aside from my personal dreams coming true, if you speak to the lads in the team not one of them under-estimates the importance of this fixture and I think that is a tribute to the lads understanding of the game and its roots that they totally understand the prestige and honour that goes with playing in the Challenge Cup.

It would be nice to think that we are going to win the Challenge cup, but I am sure that we are realistic in knowing that we are highly unlikely to go all the way, but my personal goal is to get into the third round and see what happens from there. I think what we have to remember is that we have already won by just gaining entry to the competition and anything we do from now on is a bonus.

Preparation for the game today could have been better if I am honest, but it is difficult when most of our players are playing union to make time for training, but we have had a couple of sessions and the great thing is that a lot of our guys are now playing for the same union team in the off season so it means they are maintaining some of the patterns and gaining a better understanding of each others abilities.

I am very much looking forward to big performances from Matty Allsopp, Joe Smith and Rob Lowe today, I think these three hold the key to our attack and in defence there isn't going to be many people able to beat Matt Wright and Carl Southwell. All in all I think we are going to have a strong a team as we had out at the Grand Final back in September and playing on our home

ground I am sure the lads will put on a performance to savour.

12.11.02 Extract from New League Weekly issue of 4.11.02 - Keith Fairbrother (Chairman Coventry FC) Article/Interview

Sent to Coventry. It could be worse

By Tom Mather

The Chairman and owner of Coventry Rugby Union Club,  Keith Fairbrother, stole a march on the rugby world a few weeks ago when he convinced BJ Mather that his future lay in the Midlands playing Rugby Union.

He had his forward general in All Black international Zinzan Brooke and now has his back line general in Mather. Fairbrother saw a quick return on his investment when Mather scored a match-winning try on his debut. As the Chairman told me: “He was very successful against Manchester, scoring a try. We were very impressed - his all round game was good, and coming off the back of a Rugby League season he is very fit. Considering he had only trained with the squad once, he is going to be good for us.”

Fairbrother, who has played both codes at the highest level, actually playing League for Leigh, is a man in a hurry. The present Coventry ground is soon to be replaced by a new stadium in the centre of Coventry He intends to replace an existing old velodrome with a purpose-built rugby stadium, and he was keen to emphasise the word rugby.

“We have planning permission for the new stadium which is in the city centre. It will seat 10,000 supporters to start with and that will meet all the criteria for the Zurich Premiership. Once we go to the new stadium we will go full time and be challenging for the top.”

I put it to Fairrother that such a stadium would also meet the criteria for ‘Framing in Future’, in other words for entry to the Rugby Football League. It was a point not lost on him.

“As you know we have a Rugby League team, the Coventry Bears, which I started three years ago. We won promotion last year and are hoping to get into the Conference and will work our way up. You never know there might be a club come up for sale and we take one over and move it down to Coventry and play League and Union. “I have always thought it should be a seamless sport anyway”.

“We have a massive rugby public in Coventry. There will not be any trouble getting support for Rugby League. League is an exciting ball-playing game. This is what BJ will bring to us; one-line defence, discipline, will-to-win, and it will rub-off on our Rugby Union players. I cannot see why we cannot have the two codes here. The Rugby League purists will disagree with me but in a city of this size with rugby bred into it, it will be receptive to Rugby League.”

Fairbrother is perhaps the only high profile Rugby Union Chairman to have actually played league. Speaking to him it soon becomes apparent he has a warm respect for the game equal to that of any ‘dyed in the wool’ Yorkshireman or Pie Eater

“I am very pro-Rugby League, it is exciting to play; in many ways its a better game for a forward to play because he is in the game more, has the bail in his hands more. In Rugby Union you can play the whole game and not touch the ball”.

“If more league players become available and are within our budget I would be there like a flash, because they are winners. They know it’s sudden death, one line defence, make a mistake and you’re dead. That’s what you don’t get in Rugby Union; there is always an extra man to make the tackle you should have made. You cannot get away with that in league.

“I think league players, especially backs can make the transition to union. Winning is what matters to them!’

As I said earlier he’s a man in a hurry but also has a successful track record. His Coventry Bears team may well get Conference status, but if they do not and his new stadium is up and running then I feel sure given the opportunity he would buy a club and relocate It. He appreciates the qualities league players have and is keen to instill those qualities into his Rugby Union Club. Watch what happens in the Midlands!

4.11.02 The Club has announced the venue and date of this years Awards Presentation evening

The evening - 16th November - kicks off at Old Coventrians RFC at 7.30 for 8pm. There will be a buffet provided and the £10 charge (at the door) will include entrance to the Diva nightclub for the second half of the evening (the getting totally wrecked bit).

Dress code - Bears Shirts - apparently!

Awards presented at OCs will include:

Man of Steel, Most Improved Player, Young Player of the Year, Supporters' Player of the Year, and Players' Player of the Year. There will also be another special award announced on the night.

4.11.02 More good news...In Mirf's words - " I’m a DAD -  Madeline Elizabeth Born at Warwick Hospital 1.53pm Sunday 3 November weighing 7lb 12oz. Mum and Daughter doing well – I’ll be wetting the baby's head on the 16th.

20.10.02 Three pieces of fantastic news have just landed in my in-tray.

First is that we have been invited to compete in the RL Challenge Cup - a real honour. The draw for the first round takes place on 12th November with the match itself being played on the 30th November or 1st of December. Should we progress, the next round will be played on December 14th or 15th.

Perhaps more importantly though, at yesterdays presentation two honours were bestowed on the club. The team were presented with the award for RLC Team of the Year, and Mirf received the laurels as Coach of the Year. The awards were presented by Australia's Adrian Morley.

I think we all knew that the players and the coach fully deserved these accolades - it's just great that the 'great and the good' also realise it! Massive congratulations Mirf, the players, and all concerned with running the club.

4.10.02 Coventry Bears AGM. Note below from Ron....

You will be aware that we at Coventry Bears have been invited to join the new Rugby League National Division 3.

We have made a provisional application, and now need to decide whether or not to commit ourselves to the new set up.

Whilst we do not have the full details of the new division, we have been assured by the RFL that the main issues, travel and length of playing season will be broadly similar to other seasons.

In order to assess the level of support for the new venture we have organised a meeting for Monday 14th of October for 7:00pm at Old Coventrians. It is vitally important that all interested parties attend this meeting.

We will also be discussing other items such as - do we continue to run a team in the RLC, and do we enter the Challenge Cup competition if invited to do so.

If you cannot attend the meeting please contact Al Robinson on 07974 517519 or myself on 02476 455856 (07956 251379) to share your views on these issues.

5.9.02 Grand Final Preview – Hemel Stags vs Coventry Bears. Prince of Wales Stadium, Cheltenham, 8.9.02.

In the final round of the 2002 TotalRL.com Summer Conference competition the Workforcedirect Coventry Bears travel to the Prince of Wales Stadium in Cheltenham to take on the Hemel Hempstead Stags in the Grand Final for the Harry Jepson Trophy.  This will be the Coventry side's second consecutive appearance in the Grand Final, having lost narrowly last year to the Teesside Steelers.  Coventry are confident they can go one better this year and bring the silverware home in only their third full season of Rugby League.

The team have prepared well for the final having had a break last weekend to rest a few players carrying injuries. They were back training in buoyant mood on Wednesday night as they put together their final plans to help secure what everyone hopes will be an historic victory.  The Bears are strengthened by the return of in-form back Steve Campton, and coach Stephen Harrison-Mirfield has been forced to make some very tough decisions.  Speaking after training he said “Tonight has gone fantastically well. The hardest part has been having to tell Craig ‘Poppy’ Lee that with Steve Campton’s return I have had to leave him out of the team.  Craig has come on fantastically this season and has put in some great performances for the Bears, but at the end of the day I have had to go with a big bench and that has meant I have had to leave out a player for me who epitomises what the team is all about.  He is always at training, he’s the first to volunteer to help with organising things and he has shown nothing but commitment throughout the year.”  Alan Robinson, club captain added “I’m glad I’m not picking the side, it’s been a hard call and I am sure Mirf has got it right, but you can’t help but feel for some of the lads he has had to leave out.”

The Coventry side is virtually the same team which secured the amazing comeback win in the semi finals against the North London Skolars, with the exception of the addition of Steve Campton on the wing which means moving Andy Lewis to the bench.  Other than that, no changes were seen to be required. “You have to go with form and the team that has played together. Some players have felt they are out of position, but it’s worked so effectively in the last six matches, why change it now.  On Sunday I am looking for the forwards to blaze a trail down the middle of the park and set a platform for the backs to exploit.  I have spoken to our half backs and told them to get more involved in the attack, as they had quiet games in the semis and I am confident that they will take the match by the scruff of the neck and take it to the opposition” said Harrison-Mirfield.

The Coventry side have seen the Hemel team play and are aware that they have two very good players in the hooker and loose forward roles, and this was evident when we spoke to Matty Allsopp the Coventry hooker “I’ve seen their hooker play and he’s got a good understanding of the game. I have something to prove on Sunday as he is keeping me out of the England side and I am confident I can show the selectors on Sunday that they have made the wrong decision.”

The match kicks-off at 3pm on Sunday at the Prince of Wales Stadium in Cheltenham and rugby fans are urged to go there and support the Coventry Bears if possible. For those who are unable to make it the team would like to invite everyone to join them in Chicago Rock Café at 8.30 pm to celebrate whether they win or lose.

Team:

1. Rich Pepperell  2. Steve Campton  3. Rob Lowe (c)  4. Jimmy Cathcart  5. Francis Slater  6. Alex van der Walt  7. Joe Smith  8. Rich Davies  9. Matty Allsopp  10. Carl Southwell  11. Ian McGregor  12. Johnny Nicholls  13. Matt Wright  14. Alan Robinson  15. Tim Stevens  16. Scott Carver  17. Andy Lewis

25.8.02 Scott Carver's Appeal has been successful, and the sending-off he received a couple of weeks ago has been deemed sufficient punishment. This of course means that he is now available for the Grand Final. This is fantastic news for the Bears and Scotty. Great work Mirf!

Incidentally, the referee chosen to officiate at the final is Paul Gluck.

21.8.02 Match Preview - Bears vs Skolars 24.8.02. This bank holiday weekend sees the Workforcedirect Coventry Bears take on the North London Skolars in the first of the weekend's two semi-finals of the Harry Jepson Trophy. Coventry, who have only lost one game this season, go into the game against the Skolars - who have yet to lose - with a very familiar team and high hopes of making the Grand Final on the 8th September. However they know it is going to be a very difficult match against a North London team that has just won admittance to the professional ranks making them the second professional Rugby League side in the capital. In the two teams' only meeting, a pre-season friendly, the Bears came out on top by 30 points to 20, but it is very difficult to draw any conclusions from this as both teams have changed significantly since then.
The Bears team has only one change in personnel as Steve Campton is unavailable due to family commitments and so Francis Slater slots straight back in on the wing, where he has been so effective this year. There are a couple of positional changes as the Irish Students International Joe Smith returns to the scrum half position and South African Alex van der Walt teams up with him at stand off. James Cathcart and Rob Lowe give the centres a true look of power and strength out wide to bolster an already impressive defensive line.
The same forward pack that has taken the Bears through the season remains unchanged with Alan Robinson being kept on the bench to be utilised as an impact player. Robinson said after training “I’ve spoken to the coach about where he thinks I can be best utilised and also where I’d be the most effective and we both agreed that in this highly charged match I would be best coming off the bench and attacking the Skolars once they have had some of the energy taken out of them.” Rob Lowe, team captain, was very pleased with the way training had gone saying after the game “It’s coming together now, just at the right time, we are confident going into Saturdays clash. North London are a good side, but if we stick to our game plan and work our sets, we should be able to contain them and steal a couple of tries with our set plays.”
The coach, Stephen Harrison-Mirfield, was asked his views on the Bears chances after the training session on Wednesday night and indicated that he was happy with the Bears' build up. “The guys have done everything I asked of them, I can’t ask anymore than that, we will go to the game on Saturday and do everything we can to bring the City it’s second successive Grand Final appearance.” When asked which players could win the game for the Bears he said “The great thing about the Bears team is that any of the 17 players could prove to be the difference. It has quality stamped all over it. If you asked me to name a couple of players I honestly, hand on heart, couldn’t pick just two that will make the difference. We're a team and that’s the way we play.”

Directions to the ground and further information can be found below. This sporting spectacle promises to be a great day out for all the family, with Crewe playing South London in the Plate Semi Final as a curtain raiser at 1pm.

17.8.02 The draw for the semi-final has matched the Bears with the North London Skolars. The game is to be played next Saturday (3pm KO) at the Prince of Wales Stadium, Cheltenham Spa.

16.8.02 The Ipswich play-off has been cancelled due to their inability to raise a team. Enough said for the moment.

14.8.02 Match Preview, Bears vs Ipswich Rhinos (17.8.02). The Workforcedirect Coventry Bears make a welcome return to Coundon Road this Saturday for their final game of the second phase of the ordinary season. Coventry currently have the edge over Ipswich this season having won two of the three games between the two teams, but they are still determined to make it three over the only team to have beaten them this season.
The Bears have virtually exactly the same team that they have been able to field for the last three games, with the only addition to the team being the big forward Tim Stevens who is returns after a shoulder injury put him out for two months. He replaces the ever present Francis Slater who is out with a ankle injury but is likely to be back for the Semi-final stage next week.
Rob Lowe moves back out to the centres again and teams up with his old centre partner Steve Campton, who is in a rich vein of form following his outstanding performance against Nottingham last week. Joe Smith makes his second appearance on the wing as Coach Stephen Harrison-Mirfield takes another look at last season's crucial halfback partnership of James Cathcart and Alex van der Walt,  “The half back combination is critical to our success this year and with this being the final game of the ordinary season, it will be my last chance to look at this partnership before deciding on the pair that will take us through to the semi-finals and hopefully the final” said Harrison-Mirfield after training on Wednesday.
The forwards are now a well settled unit and the Coach has only made one change bringing in-form forward and club captain Alan Robinson off the bench into the starting line up. On hearing the news Robinson said “I’m pleased to get into the starting line-up, Mirf has been using me off the bench to make big inroads once the opposition are a little more tired, but you can’t beat being in there from the start”. Other than that it’s a very familiar line-up and with great strength in depth on the bench the Bears are in confident mood for Saturdays encounter.
The Bears are hoping to draw a good crowd down to the Coundon Road ground and invite anyone interested to come along and watch, what promises to be a thrilling final home game of the season and a great family day out. Kick-off is at 2.30pm.

Team: 1) Rich Pepperell  2) Joe Smith  3) Rob Lowe  4) Steve Campton  5) Andy Lewis  6) James Cathcart  7) Alex van der Walt 8) Rich Davies  9) Matt Allsopp  10) Carl Southwell  11) Ian McGregor  12) Alan Robinson  13) Matt Wright  14) Scott Carver 15) Craig Lee  16) Tim Stevens  17) Johnny Nicholls

10.8.02 Match Result Nottingham Outlaws 4 Coventry Bears 30. The Bears marched on towards the semis with a fine win over a very determined Outlaws side. Bears dominated a fair amount of the first half without actually troubling the Nottingham line, mainly due to outstanding defence by the home side. A Nottingham interception led to their try and Cov were wondering what had hit them. However, determination finally paid off with the reply late in the half, which was topped up to take the visitors into the break leading 6-4. The second half proved to be of a similar pattern as many previous matches with Cov increasingly taking the upper hand with some wonderful running by Steve Campton and Rob Lowe. An increasingly niggly period exploded in a full-on 'riot' in the middle of the pitch which resulted in two yellow cards and a red leaving the visitors a man down. However the Bears dug in and continued to dominate -and score tries - until the whistle.

A superb win which underlines the authentic credentials of the Coventry side as Trophy challengers once again.

7.8.02 Nottingham Outlaws vs Bears Match Preview (10.8.02)  Workforcedirect Coventry Bears travel away again this week to Nottingham. Following last week's destruction of Ipswich the Team are in buoyant mood and following a good training session tonight it is apparent they are hitting a rich vein of form just at the right time.

“The lads are playing well. Training was good tonight although work and RU commitments mean we had a few missing it was still good and the last 30 minutes proved that we were really starting to tick and understand each other's game. Nottingham are a good side, often underrated and are prone to turning up a few surprises. If we are going to beat them we need to knuckle down and play like we did last week. Strong sets of six in defence and rigid patterns in attack creating space out wide for the backs to exploit" said coach Stephen Harrison-Mirfield after the session.

The match against Nottingham sees the Bears take on the only side from their league to have kept them within ten points by the final whistle. The last game was a torrid affair and whilst the Bears never really got into their stride the Nottingham team did well and made them work for every point. This time though the fixture is at Nottingham, and the Bears know it is going to be even harder and have prepared as such. Nottingham still have everything to play for as they are second in the East/Midland league and if they can beat the Bears they stand a good chance of automatically qualifying for the semi-finals.

Selection this week was again extremely difficult as the Coach had three players returning in the form of Steve Campton, Glen Southwell and Wayne Holmes, but form has played a large part in the process. With only Tom Shaw not available from last week's side Harrison-Mirfield has brought Glen Southwell back in the centres and put Steve Campton onto the bench, which unfortunately left no room for Craig Lee, who was left out only after long and hard deliberations.

Other than that the only changes in the line up are that Johnny Nicholls starts on the bench to be used as an impact player, with Matt Wright moving up into the second row and Rob Lowe swapping back from Centre to loose forward.

3.8.02 Rugby Raiders 18 Coventry Bears 2nds 44. The second team had a pleasing run-out in front of the Sky cameras at Newbold RFC this afternoon. The team, made up largely of new faces, took the game to Rugby early and went into a 6-0 lead. However the home side quickly rallied with a couple of touchdowns to make it 10-6. Another converted Bears try followed by one from Rugby made it 14-12 and virtually marked Rugby's say in the outcome.  From there on Cov stretched out to 26-14 at half-time and continued to dominate for most of the second period. Raiders came back with a late try but by then it was just a consolation as the Bears boys racked up an emphatic victory.

To his credit Colin Woods has done a fine job in assembling a squad, and his organisation off the pitch and leadership on the pitch was not in doubt today. The Raiders have some way to become competitive enough to complete on equal terms with the existing Summer Conference sides. However, it's very early days, and we wish them every success.

Cov  - 9 tries, 4 conversions

Rugby - 4 tries, 1 conversion

1.8.02 Ipswich vs Bears Match Preview (3.8.02). The Workforcedirect Coventry Bears travel all the way to Ipswich in this the second round of the second phase of the Harry Jepson Trophy. The Bears only defeat this season was at the hands of the Ipswich team and so this one is a big game for both sides.  Ipswich want to show their victory in June wasn’t a one off and the Bears are determined to settle the score, not to mention that both teams want to secure a place in the semi-finals.

The Coventry side is a greatly changed side from the one that travelled to Ipswich last time, with International representative players such as Alan Robinson, Johnny Nicholls, Joe Smith, James Cathcart and Rich Pepperell all missing last time. The game should prove to be Coventry’s biggest test so far and is no doubt going to be a tight affair. The Bears coach, Stephen Harrison-Mirfield (Mirf), said “The Ipswich side are well disciplined and all quite fit, they don’t particularly have much size in their pack, but this makes them more mobile than the average team. The secret for us is going to be to get on top right from the kick off and ensure we play out our sets to the patterns we have worked on. If we can also hold them in defence, working hard at drifting and ensuring we hold our line rather than shooting out for the one big hit, then I am very confident that we can go there and come away with a victory.”

Selection this week has proved problematic for Harrison-Mirfield, but fortunately for all the right reasons. Speaking after the game last week Rob Lowe (Match Captain) said “Mirf had a few difficult calls to make this week, there are a lot of lads out there who are all in contention and the hardest thing in the world is to tell a guy who’s playing well that he hasn’t been selected because other guys are playing as well, or are more suited to a particular opposition. It’s been a tough call, but we have our strongest available 17 players out for Saturday's match.”

This weeks team sees a couple of enforced changes from the Bears side that beat Leicester for the third time last week. Glen Southwell and Wayne Holmes are unavailable, and so Rich Pepperell the Welsh representative international makes a welcome return at full back. Pepperell’s defensive ability is only surpassed by his attacking prowess, with his ability to come onto a ball from nowhere being an excellent weapon for the Bears to introduce at this critical time of the season. The wings are made up from the ever present Shaw and Slater whilst Rob Lowe moves back out to the centres from his stint in the pack last week, it is from the centres that Lowe has proved most effective this year and his presence there is bound to shore up the Bears defence out wide. He is joined in the centres by James Cathcart who switches from the stand off role this week, and is bound to cause the Ipswich side trouble in this wider role. The half back combination sees Joe Smith and Alex van der Walt back together for the first time in three weeks; arguably the best partnership for the bears this season.

The pack has a very familiar and settled ring to it, with Carl Southwell, Rich Davies and last week's man of the match Matt Allsopp starting in the front row.  Johnny Nicholls and Ian McGregor provide the second row combination that has been so consistent for the Bears all season. Matt 'Salty' Wright is back at his usual loose forward position and the Australian is sure to bolster the side, especially with his excellent motivational and defensive abilities. Starting off the bench this week Alan Robinson is sure to be used as an impact player for the Bears, along with Craig 'Poppy' Lee and Scott Carver, he makes up the rotating pack of nine players, which is essential when playing in these hot summer conditions. Finally Andy Lewis makes up the seventeen and is pleased to be back in the side for the second week, speaking after training on Wednesday Lewis said “It’s great to be back in the side. I had to take a break due to work commitments and when I came back I was unsure if I’d be able to get back into the side as there are so many quality players down at the Bears this season and no-one is guaranteed a place, it’s just great to get back into the thick of it”   Team:1) Rich Pepperell 2) Tom Shaw 3) Rob Lowe 4) James Cathcart 5) Francis Slater 6) Alex van der Walt 7) Joe Smith 8) Rich Davies 9) Matt Allsopp 10) Carl Southwell 11) Ian McGregor 12) Johnny Nicholls 13) Matt Wright 14) Alan Robinson 15) Scott Carver 16) Craig Lee 17) Andy Lewis

28.7.02 Bears Wedding in sight? Following yesterday's win over Leicester, in which John Nicholls played a significant part, John and Hannah announced their engagement! Congratulations to you both from all at the club (but just be careful which date you select - there are some important matches coming up....).

25.7.02 Match Preview - Coventry Bears vs Leicester Phoenix (First Play-off), 27.7.02  As the next round of the TotalRL.com Summer Conference League starts, the Coventry Bears find themselves in a tough league in which points difference is going to make all the difference when it comes to the end of season Grand Final.  With fixtures against Leicester Phoenix on Saturday, Ipswich Rhinos (A 3/8/02 and H 17/8/02) and Nottingham Outlaws (A 10/8/02) the level of competition has lifted to another level as the weaker divisional sides are moved into the plate competition.

The nature of the competition from here on is such that there are six teams in the league and means that the Bears do not play St Albans Centurions and Luton Vipers. With only one team guaranteed to go through to the Semi Finals, Coventry must ensure that they win and also that they notch up some good scores.  This is certainly not going to be easy against three teams who they have already beaten at least once this season but by narrow margins.  Ipswich are going to be the team that the Bears have to beat as they managed to pull off the upset of the season by beating an under strength Cov side in mid season.

Coach Stephen Harrison-Mirfield, said “We are probably in the hardest league as there are no easy sides. Each of them has played well in order to get where they are today and unlike some of the other regional leagues the Midlands has consistently managed to put out strong teams over the last five years.”  While the Bears are certainly favourites to top this group it is by no means assured and they will really have to up their game in order to fulfil their potential.

This week Coventry take on a vastly improved Leicester team who they have already beaten twice this season, however after a comfortable 54-14 win in the first outing the Bears were pushed to the wire in the second meeting coming out eventual winners by 30 points to 14. One thing will be certain in this game - with the slate being wiped clean and the second round leagues starting from scratch, Leicester will be out for revenge.

Over the last three years this fixture has proved an exciting one with no love lost between the two neighbouring teams.  The Bears have been training hard though and are now starting to reap the benefits of the new regime with defined patterns of play being blended with the team’s raw talent and ability. Mirf said “I am happy with the way training has gone recently; the lads are really starting to grasp the ideas we have been working on and are beginning to play to a pattern. If we can keep these patterns today and work hard in defence closing down the Leicester danger players, particularly their stand-off and loose forward, then I am very confident we will kick this new league off with a good win.  Don’t misunderstand me, it is by no means a forgone conclusion, but the lads know what their tasks are. They are switched on and focussed and I have a very strong belief that we can go one better this season and win the competition”.

The team is now starting to take a familiar form, but there are a couple of changes. Wayne Holmes maintains his role as full back and is supported on the wings by the familiar faces of Francis Slater and Tom Shaw, whilst the awesome Glen Southwell will be sure to prove a handful in the centre. Due to work commitments Steve Campton takes a break this week and Alex van der Walt moves from his normal stand-off role into the centres to combine with Glen.  James Cathcart the erstwhile Warwickshire fly-half makes a welcome return to the Bears team at stand-off and is expected to control the kicking aspects of the game, In the words of captain Alan Robinson, “Jimmy gives us an extra dimension; he is perceptive and a natural ball player. Combined with his kicking game he could prove the difference in a very difficult tie”. Linking up with Cathcart this week is England Students scrum-half Alex Brown.

The forwards have all the hallmarks of being the best pack in the Summer Conference, with Carl Southwell, Rich Davies and Matt Allsopp making up an fearsome front row, backed by a very big but agile back three of Ian McGregor, Jonny Nicholls and Rob Lowe.  Lowe is making his third appearance as skipper this season and is bound to get the Coventry team working hard and is sure to lead by example following the pattern of his excellent performances so far this season.

On the Bench Matt Wight makes a welcome return after injury kept him out of the Leicester and Birmingham games. Alan Robinson will be utilized in his normal impact role, but coming from the bench this time, allowing him to use his size and speed to work on the smaller backs once they have been worn down by the starting line up.  The excellent Joe Smith starts on the bench and will be a superb weapon to bring on as the match progresses, having such outstanding support play and the ability to confuse the opposition defence with his jinking runs, he will be invaluable to the team. Finally the team welcome back Andy Lewis to the fold. Andy has missed a large chunk of the season through work commitments. His ability to motivate his team mates and his exceptional understanding of the game is also going to be invaluable today.

The fixture will be played at Old Coventrians, Tile Hill Lane on Saturday, kick-off 2.30pm (directions to the ground here). With crowds increasing week on week this Midlands derby will no doubt prove to be an exceptional piece of sporting entertainment and all supporters are urged to come down and cheer on one of Coventry’s most successful sporting sides.  The day should prove to be great afternoon for all ages and will hopefully be the first step towards the ultimate goal of winning the Grand final on September 8th.

11.7.02 Match Preview - Birmingham Bulldogs vs Coventry Bears, 13.7.02 - The final game of the first part of the season sees a victorious Bears side travel to the Birmingham Bulldogs for what is likely to be a great end to this initial group stage. Coventry bears comprehensively destroyed the Birmingham side in the corresponding home fixture, with a weakened team, but if anything is certain in Rugby League summer conference, it is that no team is ever the same twice, as proved by a lively Leicester Phoenix last week.

The Bears are short of influential South African stand-off Alex van der Walt, and so England Students player Alex Brown steps up into the role. Brown has a wealth of high level Rugby League experience and is sure to be out to make the position his own. Matt Wright is also out through injury and so the Bears team has been re-shuffled to include a couple of new faces and the return to more familiar positions for others. Rob Lowe returns to the pack at loose forward as Steve Campton returns after a two week absence. Campton slots in alongside the ever consistent Glen Southwell and the two should provide the backbone of an awesome backs line.

Tony Wright makes his first starting line up appearance at prop with ever present Rich Davies along side him, with Matt Allsopp making up the front row at hooker. After last weeks fantastic return for Allsopp we can expect further improvements this week as he leads the Bears pack around the park.

First appearances for Dean Thompson and Jason Wetton show that the Bears have strength in depth and selection is becoming more of a problem for the coach Stephen Harrison-Mirfield week by week. He said after training on Wednesday "we are having problems as everyone is so keen to get on the ball park, but i'd much rather have it this way than the opposite. The lads know it is a squad game and as such they work for each other and it is a pleasure seeing them fight so hard to secure a spot in the first 17. With fixtures now starting to become a reality for the second team it will up the stakes yet further"

The game is at Walsall Rugby Union Club's ground (directions below) K.O. 2.30pm and all spectators are welcome.

Team:
1) Wayne Holmes 2) Tom Shaw 3) Steve Campton 4) Glen Southwell 5) Francis Slater 6) Alex Brown 7) Joe Smith 8) Tony Wright 9) Matt Allsopp 10) Rich Davies 11) Alan Robinson 12) Johnny Nicholls 13) Rob Lowe 14) Dean Thompson 15) Craig Lee 16) Scott Carver 17) Jason Wetton/ Ian McGregor

8.7.02 Bears on the telly!!   The Bears second string will play a match against Rugby on the 3rd of August, and Sky TV will feature the match as it will be Rugby 's first ever game. More details as soon as available.

Upcoming match venues: We will not have Coundon Rd for the game on the 27th of July (Leicester) but will definitely have it for the 17th of August (Ipswich).

6.7.02 Match Result -  Coventry Bears 30 Leicester Phoenix 16. In another 'game of two halves' the Bears completed their first-phase home program with a satisfying win over Phoenix. Trailing 6-0 from very early on, Cov pulled level late in the first half to turn round at six apiece. However, better play and fortune - inspired by another top display by Rob Lowe, secured the points and emphasised the Bears' superiority in the Midlands competition once again.

Scorers: Joe Smith (2), Tom Shaw, John Nicholls, Carl Southwell, Wayne Holmes. Goals, Holmes (3)

4.7.02 Unfortunately we have been unable to secure opposition for the proposed second-team game on Saturday, so this has, reluctantly, been cancelled - together with plans for a barbecue. However, things are looking brighter for the next home game, and details should be made known soon.

3.7.02 Match Preview - Bears vs Leicester 6th July 2002. Following a big victory at the emerging Wolverhampton last weekend, this Saturday sees the Bears take on much stronger opposition in Leicester Phoenix, who have a point to prove after Coventry comfortably beat them earlier in the season. The match on Saturday sees Leicester able to field a full strength squad for the second weekend in a row after they upset unbeaten side St. Albans in last week’s fixture.
The Bears are up to a virtually full strength side with only the two Campton brothers and Matt Wright missing due to work commitments.  The Bears have a very strong starting thirteen with strength in depth on the bench.  Matt Allsopp steps up after an enforced break due to injury and the influential hooker is sure to want to make a big impact on his return.  Matt being the only real change in the pack from last weeks side, Coach Stephen Harrison-Mirfield said "The pack is immense. It has quality throughout, we have four lads who have played international representative rugby and the other two are probably the most consistent players we have had in the team this year. It will be a big forward battle but I am confident that our lads will win through." The backs also maintain a consistency from last week with Rob Lowe and Glen Southwell once again combining in the centers. After their awesome haul of five tries between them last weekend, the bears are looking for another big performance from the pair.
This match promises to be the Bears’ biggest test of the season so far and should be a match well worth watching. Club Captain Alan Robinson believes “the Bears have the quality to go all the way this season. We have to focus on doing things right and make sure we capitalize on all our chances.  It will be a tough game; Leicester are out to prove a point, but if we focus on playing to our strengths and don't get drawn into their tactics I am confident that we will take another two points from this match, although we wont be taking anything for granted”.
Speaking after training coach Harrison-Mirfield said "tonight’s session went well. We are getting a good turn out each week and each week we are seeing a marked improvement in the form of all the lads. The players all know that Saturday’s game is going to be a gargantuan battle and they are all preparing hard for it.  If we stick to our game plan and take control from the start we should be able to dictate play. We have to spoil in defence and be quick in attack, they have a couple of key players and if we can close them down quickly they will have a tendency to go off their game."
The Bears are already guaranteed first place in the Midlands division, but this game is by no means irrelevant. If the Bears can get on top and win it will be a clear signal to the other teams in the other regional leagues that they mean business. A loss at the weekend on the other hand could seriously hamper the Bears’ preparation for the next stage of the championship and ultimately their plans for reaching the Grand Final once again.
Whatever the result it is certain to be an excellent spectacle and supporters are urged to come down and watch one of Coventry’s premier sporting teams in action. Kick off is at 2.30pm at Old Coventrians RUFC, Tile Hill Lane. Everyone is welcome.
Team:
1 Wayne Holmes, 2 Tom Shaw, 3 Glen Southwell, 4 Rob Lowe, 5 Francis Slater, 6 Alex van der Walt, 7 Alex Brown, 8 Carl Southwell, 9 Matt Allsopp, 10 Rich Davies, 11 Alan Robinson, 12 Johnny Nicholls, 13 Ian McGregor, 14 Scott Carver, 15 Tim Stevens, 16 Joe Smith, 17 Craig Lee

29.6.02 Match result - Wolverhampton Wizards 1 Coventry Bears 74. A rejuvenated Bears side put together some champagne rugby to complete the season's double over the Wizards. John Nicholls, no doubt spurred on by the lovely Hannah ;) turned in a hat trick on his return to action, as did hooker Rob Lowe - who claimed the Man of the Match award for an all-action display. Glen Southwell chipped in with a brace and added six goals for a personal tally of 20 points. Scrum-half Joe Smith and debutant full-back Wayne Smith also bagged a pair apiece, with the balance from Francis Slater, Scott Carver, and from the boot of Alex van der Walt.

The entire squad today put in a 110% performance, with several players (in my humble opinion) playing some of their best rugby in a Bears shirt - including Craig Lee, Joe Smith and Rob Lowe. The pack were awesome, the backs (minus late England conscript Dave Campton) sublime, and but for one or two handling errors and some rather strange decisions by the (on balance, excellent) referee, it would have been a considerably wider margin. It must have been almost impossible to pick a man of the match today.

28.6.02 Change to published team for Wizards match - Craig Lee will start on the bench at No17 in place of Alex Brown, who is on England duty.

27.6.02 Match Preview - Wolverhampton Wizards vs Coventry Bears, 29th June 2002, Four Ashes, Staffs.

Ron Banks writes: The Workforcedirect Coventry Bears travel to Four Ashes to face bottom of the Midlands table Wolverhampton Wizards on Saturday (Kick off 2:30).

Wolverhampton, without a win this season, will face a Bears team that is beginning to knuckle down to some hard work. The Bears have been badly hit by the success of the Warwickshire rugby union team in the early part of the season, but that should be behind them now. Coach Steve Harrison-Mirfield said after training on Wednesday “at last we are starting to look like a side that really wants to go places. We know we can play better than we have been and this is the ideal opportunity for us to get some confidence back”.

Hooker Matty Allsopp will be missing with a broken bone in his hand but influential forwards John Nicholls and Rob Lowe are back in the squad. The only doubt is skipper Alan Robinson who will face a late fitness test on a damaged ankle picked up in last weeks win over Nottingham Outlaws.

Bears coach Steve Harrison-Mirfield writes: The Coventry Bears are starting to click into top gear this week. After a club meeting on Monday a few hard decisions were made that will ultimately only benefit the team; from now on only players who train will get a game and this policy will be strictly adhered to. After a couple of shock omissions from the team that played the Outlaws training attendance was up and with a new more structured approach to the training regime, we expect to see marked improvements in our performance on Saturday.

Another new policy introduced was announcing the team on Wednesday following training. As such the team this week has a couple of key changes; Wayne Holmes gets his first run out at full-back. I am looking for a big performance from this highly talented Warwickshire County Championship player. He has a good reading of the game and will make a big difference chipping into the line on attack. Dave Campton joins the player of the last match, Glen Southwell in the centres to form a pretty formidable partnership, while form try scorers Francis Slater and Tom Shaw take the two wing spots. Alex van der Walt moves back into his traditional stand-off role and rekindles his partnership with scrum-half Joe Smith. If these two click as they have in previous rounds the Bears' strike force should be potent.

There are a couple of changes in the forward line up. Matty Allsopp has been forced out due to injury and will be a big loss to the team, but former Rochdale professional and Great Britain Students Skipper Rob Lowe steps into the fray. This will be his first outing for the bears at hooker, but with his motivational ability and ball handling skills he should slot into the role comfortably. Consistency dictates the prop choices with Carl Southwell and Rich Davies being selected to start. The back three are made up from Club Captain and Irish international Alan Robinson in the second row with a return to the fold for Jonny Nicholls who should add some steel and passion to the team and in particular the pack. Ian McGregor makes up the starting thirteen at loose forward. Ian has probably been Coventry's most consistent forward in recent games.

On the bench we have a great mix of motivation, skill, strength and good looks with Matt Wright, Tim Stevens, Scott Carver and Alex Brown making up the seventeen for the day (I'll leave you to work out who's who). (Can't imagine what you mean Mirf - Kimbo).

Coach Mirf said " I'm looking for a big game all round on Saturday, we have to up the ante and blow away our mid season blues. Most of the teams in the Conference are making great strides forward and picking up a number of talented union players keen for some summer action. We have to remain focussed and not get complacent. Training on Wednesday night went very well, the team worked exceptionally well and put a lot of effort in. We still have some improvements to make, but I am happier with the way things are going. The Wizards should prove interesting on their own patch - they have done fantastically well in securing their own ground and will certainly be wanting to make up for our previous encounter, which was a little one sided."

Other news is that we hope to have a second team fixture on the 6th July; opposition and venues are yet to be confirmed, but it will be a great opportunity for a number of players who have been pushing for first team places to show the coach their ability and perhaps make the break into the first team. We will also be having a family event that day so all families, girlfriends, wives, children, parents and grandparents are invited to come and watch what will surely be two high class games of Rugby League - and then join the players for a barbecue and drinks after the game. A small charge will be made to cover the cost of food, but it will be surely worth it just to see the bears play. Further details of this family day and second team game will be made available ASAP after Saturday's match.

The Full team is:

1. Wayne Holmes, 2. Francis Slater, 3. Glen Southwell, 4. Dave Campton, 5. Tom Shaw, 6. Alex van der Walt, 7. Joe Smith, 8. Carl Southwell, 9. Rob Lowe, 10. Rich Davies, 11. Alan Robinson, 12. Jonny Nicholls, 13. Ian McGregor, 14. Matt Wright, 15. Tim Stevens, 16. Scott Carver, 17. Alex Brown

22.6.02 The Bears met stiff opposition at Old Coventrians' Tile Hill Lane ground this afternoon, before finally running out winners by 26-18. It was nip & tuck all the way with the result in doubt right up to the end. Bears ran in six tries, mostly wide out on the flanks, converting only one. Nice to see Julian Harrison among the spectators. Report to be posted soon.

20.6.02 Nottingham Outlaws' merry band come to Coventry on Saturday, thirsting for revenge, but the Workforcedirect Coventry Bears are raring to get their season back on track after their disappointing defeat at Ipswich Rhinos two weeks ago. With skipper Alan Robinson back and other players vying for a starting place the Bears will be keen to get back into action after last week's 'gap' weekend. Once again the game will be played at Old Coventrians' Tile Hill Lane ground (Kick off 2:30) as Coundon Road is still not available due to the reseeding of the pitch. Coventry Secretary Ron Banks said “We are really grateful to Old Coventrians. They have made us most welcome over the past few weeks and we like playing there. We have managed to notch up some cracking scores and hopefully we can get back to winning ways”. Nottingham Outlaws are currently second in the Midlands division behind the Bears and are on equal points with both Leicester and Birmingham. They are anxious to finish in the top three. A number of players are now returning to the Coventry fold after summer breaks, and the return of inspirational skipper Alan Robinson should see a marked change in the team as will the return of Jonny Nicholls after an enforced break with an ankle injury. The other great news is that a number of players who were carrying injuries prior to the break have now recovered and all this means the Bears should be able to field a full strength team. Stephen Harrison-Mirfield (Coach) believes the move to Old Coventrians is good news. He said "the pitch is wide and gives our backs a great opportunity to use their pace outside and attack on the wings. After watching the last encounter with Nottingham I think we got too involved in playing out a forward battle and when we gave the ball to our centres and wingers we generally had the pace to get around the outside and score relatively freely. Don't get me wrong, the Outlaws will have had a chance to regroup since our last game and I'm sure they'll have a few jokers up their sleeve. I am looking forward to the game, it will be an opportunity to put the mid-season hiccup right and start getting things back on track." The team are continuing to grow and there will be a club meeting in the next week to identify a proper strategy for driving the club forward. Items that will be discussed are: youth development, developing a second team and identifying competitors for them, winter Rugby League, fund raising, attracting more supporters and generally developing a strong Bears community. Ideas on these topics and any others are invited from players, supporters and anyone else who might fancy a say. They should be directed to Alan Robinson, Stephen Harrison-Mirfield, Ron Banks or Steve Kimberley in the first instance (Details on the Contacts & Links page). Numbers at training continue to increase as the Rugby Union season has finally drawn to a close. Congratulations should go to James Cathcart, John Munro, Jody Peacock, Dave Campton, Carl Southwell, Sam Viggers and the rest of the team for their great win at Twickenham.

12.6.02 Welsh Bears Get Ready to Rumble. On Friday evening two of Coventry's latest Internationals travel north of the border for the first clash in the new Home Nations tournament.

Rich 'Chunky' Davies writes:

''Rich Pepperell and I travel up on Friday night to Glasgow with the squad and return on the Sunday.

Scotsoun Stadium, Glasgow is the kick off for the biggest amateur international tournament in Britain this year, with Scotland playing hosts to Wales in the first match of the inaugural Amateur Home Nations series. Since 1997 there have been regular amateur internationals between the two nations, but this time there is far more on the line, including the chance to prove to the rest of Britain where the best amateurs come from.

The Glasgow City Council is supporting the opening match, and kick off is 2.00pm on Saturday June 15th.''

I'm sure all the Bears players, management and supporters would like to join me in wishing Chunky and Taff all the best for the match.

6.6.02 Travel to Ipswich. Workforcedirect are providing buses for travel to Ipswich on Saturday, and a few places remain available. Buses leave Coundon Road at 10am. Please book with Ron Banks (024 7645 5856 or 07956 251379) as soon as possible. If you are driving, directions may be obtained from the Rhinos' site (link on the home page).
6.6.02 Match Preview: Ipswich Rhinos vs Coventry Bears. Humber Doucey Lane, Ipswich 2.30pm Saturday 8th June 2002.The Workforcedirect Coventry Bears enter the second half of the regular season on Saturday when they play Ipswich Rhinos at Ipswich RU.
The Bears, who are top of the Midlands and 'composite' tables, have managed this without the Warwickshire County RU players who lifted the County Shield at Twickenham last Saturday.
The return of those players will cause coach Steve Harrison-Mirfield considerable selection difficulties. "The players that we have used this season have got us to the top. It's important not to rock the boat and unsettle the squad players, but we know that from stage two of the competition we will have to improve and we will need to be on the top of our game".
In stage two, the six divisions are paired to give three groups, with the champions of each group going through to the semi-finals. The fourth semi finalist will be the best runner up from the three groups.
The Midlands are paired with the East. As the table stands at the moment the Bears (Midlands 1st) will play Nottingham (Midland 2nd) at home. Cambridge (East 3rd), home and away and Leicester (Mid 3rd) at Leicester.
Many people believe the pairing with the East brings together two of the weaker divisions.
Teesside, last season's champions, will be fighting it out with Manchester and Rotherham in the North/Northeast group.
The South/Central South pairing looks to be the most competitive with North London, Crawley. Hemel, Gloucester and Cardiff all vying for the automatic place in the semi finals. The fourth semi finalist will be the best runner up from the three groups.
A brief look at the other pace-setting teams:
Teesside still unbeaten in the conference.
Manchester have recruited well and believe they can win this year.
Rotherham have had a poor start by their own high standards they will be looking to kick on from here.
North London have set their sights on running a team in the Northern Ford Premiership and the conference next year. They have strong ties with the London Broncos.
Crawley twice winners and beaten semi-finalist last year - they always start slowly due to RU commitments but are becoming stronger now.
Hemel are always there or thereabouts.
Gloucester are coming back to be the force they once were.
Cardiff, with a strong base of players from the local area, are difficult to beat.

1.6.02 Result - Coventry Bears 78 Birmingham Bulldogs 22 The Bears made it five from five with a heavy defeat of the Bulldogs in the blazing sun at Old Covents this afternoon. Fourteen tries (Steve Campton 3, Joe Smith, Francis Slater, Alex Van der Walt, Johnny Nicholls, Tom Shaw with a brace apiece, and Andy Lewis) and eleven conversions kept the Bears at the top of the pile. The only negative was the first yellow card of the season (to Johnny 'Mad Dog' Nicholls for trading handbags with Birmingham loose forward Simon Smith) unless you count the defence falling asleep on several occasions!

With several of the victorious Warwickshire squad available next week coach Steve Harrison-Mirfield now faces some welcome problems selecting his squad for the return trip to Ipswich for the second cross-conference clash.

30.5.02 Match Preview - Coventry Bears vs Birmingham Bulldogs (Saturday 1st June)

High flying Workforcedirect Coventry Bears will be looking to consolidate their position at the top of the Rugby League Conference on Saturday.

Coundon Road has been reseeded so the Bears will be playing Birmingham Bulldogs at Old Coventrians RUFC Tile Hill Lane ground (Kick off 2:30). Click these links to find a  location map and the Old Coventrians website.

The game marks the halfway point of the regular season and the Bears will again be short of the Warwickshire RU contingent who play at Twickenham in the County Shield Final.

With skipper Alan Robinson unavailable for selection, the Bears will again rely on squad players who have served them so well this season.

Team Manager Ron Banks said after training on Wednesday, “our squad have been brilliant this season so far. There have been one or two key people missing and we hope that next week we can start putting out our strongest side as we kick on to the play-offs”.

Coach Steve Harrison-Mirfield commented, “we will be looking to carry on as we did in the second half against Leicester last week. We cannot complain as we are top of the table and yet we know we are not playing to the standard we are capable of. We have the ability to reach the play-offs, but they will be much  more competitive than the group stages and we need to be starting to raise the level of our game”.

26.5.02 Added link on home page and Contacts & Links page for the Rugby League Conference Yahoo Newsgroup. Please sign up for this, it's free, and you get a newsletter and other updates.

25.5.02 Result - Leicester 14 Bears 54. After a bright start, taking a 4-0 lead, Bears conspired to concede three tries and look a shadow of their former selves for much of the rain-swept first half. However they fought back to turn round at 14-14, and never looked back in the second period to run in a series of unanswered tries and record a satisfying win. Full report and pix to follow later. PICTURES NOW ADDED on the Picture Gallery page. Not many worth publishing due to the awful weather for a large part of the game, plus the fact I'd rather not watch through the viewfinder.
24.5.02 Leicester match rearranged. Leicester Phoenix are unable to fulfill the fixture at the Vipers ground and so the match has been transferred to Old Coventrians RFC, Tile Hill Lane, Coventry (Near Sainsbury's/A45). Matt Allsopp has posted directions on the Message Board. Other useful links are Old Coventrians own website and this location map.

Match Preview (by Ron Banks)

The table-topping Bears are ‘away’ to Leicester Phoenix on Saturday, although the game will be staged at Old Coventrians RFC, Tile Hill Lane, Coventry (2:30).

The Bears will be anxious to make amends for last season when Leicester inflicted their only regular season defeat.  Coventry captain Alan Robinson commented that “Leicester are a funny sort of team, they seem to blow hot and cold. But we owe them one for last season”

Ex-England students Rob Lowe and Tony Wright will make a welcome return after being unavailable last week. With up to seven of the squad preparing to play at Twickenham for Warwickshire RU next week the Bears will again be limited to their choice of players.

Coach Steve Harmon-Mirfield said “ It’s not an ideal situation but the players we have used so far this season have done us proud. When the Warwickshire boys are available for selection I will have some difficult choices to make. It is the sort of decision that as a coach you hope for.”

22.5.02 Route to Leicester. Leicester Phoenix play at The Vipers RFU ground, Blaby Bypass, Whetstone, Nr Leicester. (0116 286 4777) See Above!

18.5.02 Today's result - Bears 80 Wizards 4. The Bears, under-strength yet again due to county RFU commitments, took the Wizards apart in a superb 16 try display of running rugby. Report and Pics now online.

16.5.02 The Bears entertain the Wolverhampton Wizards on Saturday at Coundon Road (Kick off 5:30). The game follows the Warwickshire RU semi final and the Coventry team will be looking to perform well in front of an unusually large crowd. Hopefully the rugby union supporters will like what they see and come back for more.

With up to seven of the Bears team being involved with the union game they will once again have to draw on their reserves as they did two weeks ago.

Team captain Alan Robinson said “The players we have used in our two fixtures to date have really done us proud and this is the chance some of the lads have been waiting for to stake a claim for a regular place in the starting line-up”

Wolverhampton have had a much better start to the season than in previous years and have undoubtedly strengthened their squad. The table topping Bears know however that they will be judged on the result of this match by the other teams in the Rugby League Conference, who are still trying to determine the relative merits of the other teams in the competition. A good win will confirm that once again the Bears will be a force to be reckoned with.

13.5.02 Result from Nottingham - Outlaws 12  Bears 48. Another hat-full of tries, but a paucity of conversions again. Bears settle into second place in the National table, with an inferior points difference to Teesside (them again!!!) but with the best defensive record in the league. Player stats now added here too. Many thanks to Gav Slater of the Outlaws website for the excellent photos here.
7.5.02. Well, here at last is the new, updated, and hopefully improved Coventry Bears Website - better late than never. I hope you find it an improvement in at least some ways, and I'd appreciate some feedback (definitely if you find any broken links). I've taken the opportunity to 'layer' things a bit, and you'll find that last year's info is all grouped below a page called 'Previous Seasons'. Take care though, some of the files are pretty big and may take some time to download over a modem. I am going to shrink some of the photos over the coming weeks so that should improve a little. The warning also applies to the News Archive page, and I will try to split that in the future too. One new feature is the 'Picture Gallery'. This is still under construction, but has already got Rhinos pics in it. The Worcester & Skolars bits will soon be completed, and I am hopeful of a few shots forthcoming from the Nottingham match - thanks Gav!!! Don't forget the News Service is still running, and the Mailing List is there to tip you off re. changes to the site/additions, news etc. if you sign up to it. Note that all links are now grouped across the top of the pages. Anyway, hope you like it
4.5.02. I know it's bad timing, what with the start of the season and all, but this site is currently undergoing a major rebuild, partly due to factors out of my control. Therefore you'll probably find that most links are temporarily missing or inoperative for the time being. Sorry for the inconvenience, but I hope to have the new site up and running sometime over the next two days, so keep checking back. If you are registered for the Mailing List, you should receive notification via e-mail just as soon as it's a goer. By the way, if you want the Message Board, go to the Contacts & Links page. Meanwhile...Coventry Bears 40 - Ipswich 6 was the result today of the opening game of the 2002 TotalRL.com season. Bears met stubborn resistance for most of the first half eventually turning round fourteen-nil  to the good. The second half saw a better display, although strong late pressure from the Rhinos could well have resulted in more reward than the one converted try

Scorers:

Bears - Tries: Andy Lewis (2), Joe Smith (2), Rich Pepperell, Ian McGregor, Matt Wright and Francis Slater. Cons Pepperell (4)

Rhinos - Try, Paul Roberts; Con, Richard Pollard

Report and more pics as soon as possible.

30.4.02. Confirmation that Saturday's match (only!!) is definitely at Broadstreet RFC's excellent facility, in Binley Woods, Coventry. Kick off 2.30pm, entrance free. This is the first round of the TotalRL.com Summer Conference 2002, and a good crowd would be much appreciated by the boys. The match is against 2001 Eastern Conference champs Ipswich Rhinos.

For anyone that doesn't know, Broadstreet's NEW ground is just a few yards further out of Cov on the same road  (A428, signed for Brandon & Rugby) as the old one but just beyond the Coventry Eastern Bypass. Just look for TGI Friday's and carry on over the roundabout; the entrance to the ground is a few yards along on the left. If approaching from Ipswich, use the A14 and then M6, leaving at Junction 2. Head south on the A46 Eastern Bypass and leave at the second roundabout (turn left, A428, ground is a few yards on the left).

We are expecting a great game, even though the Bears will be shorn of a number of first teamers due to RU County Championship commitments (coincidentally also at Broadstreet immediately after the Bears vs Ipswich match). It certainly ought to be much more evenly balanced than last year's 84-0 debacle at Durham!

In the morning, also at Broadstreet, starting at approximately 11am there will be a 'RL Taster' coaching session for secondary school children. All such schools in Coventry should have received an invite to this, and we are hoping for a good turnout for the session which will be taken by first-teamers, and Grand-Finalists, Rich Davies and Andy Lewis. Interest in RL at this age level in the city is said to be increasing rapidly, and the club is looking to become more involved in the 'Academy' side of things - always assuming suitable opposition can be found within reasonable travelling distance.

Hope to see you there.

21.4.02  Bears 30 London Skolars 20 . Bears completed their pre-season programme with a hard-earned win against a very committed Skolars side.

Bears were quickly in front through a try from centre Rob Lowe, and had increased the lead to 12-0 with two more by full back Rich Pepperell and wing Francis Slater by the 23 minute mark.

However, Skolars seemed to find their stride and pulled back to lead 14-12 at half-time.

Bears then got back on top of things in the second half with two more tries by Francis Slater, one from forward Carl Southwell, and a final one from John Nichols. With goalkicking seeming to be a problem, only one try was topped up by Will Tunnicliffe, although it must be said that most kicks were from the touchline.

Skolars then went through for a late consolation six-pointer.

This was an encouraging warm-up, giving the team and the supporters a chance to gauge the effect of several new faces, most of which slotted in very nicely.

Thanks go to the Skolars for making the trip, and making it a very entertaining match. Roll on May 4th!

17.4.02  Efforts are being made to arrange 2nd team fixtures, but this is not easy in this area.  However, we have already been offered 2nd team home and away matches against the new Swansea club. Other fixtures are being actively sought.

Any players of any level are welcome to attend training sessions on Wednesdays at 6.30pm. For details contact Ron or Alan .

6.4.02 Have added a link to the Mapquest map and driving directions finder. Click on the link to the left. The map is pretty obvious and you can do all the usual web-type things like pan and zoom. The driving directions may come in useful for finding your way to a UK address. For example, typing in LE10 3PN and CV6 1DU gives detailed directions from my place to the ground. Obviously you can use any Postal code you want. I'll try to assemble a list of Conference ground postal codes before the start of the season. Hope you find it useful.Reminder that training starts next week (Wednesday 10th at Coundon Road, 6.30pm start).

13.3.02 There's a preview of the US Tomahawks vs Irish Wolfhounds game  here.  I quote from it....... "The Wolfhounds have a couple of big lumps of their own. 'Man Mountain' Alan Robinson has loads of experience and with the green of his Ireland jersey and the smooth bald head, this 'Shrek' lookalike will be a real crowd pleaser with his explosive bursts and ferocious tackling".

12.3.02 Bears Mailing list added here. Joining the list ensures that you will get e-mail notification of updates to the site as soon as they are made.  Note, however, that minor updates may not always be notified. Reports and similar major updates normally will be.
12.3.02 TotalRL.com Rugby League Conference fixtures for 2002 added here.
11.3.02 Report on the Bears vs Worcester match, now online here.
10.3.02 The Bravenet services seem to be getting back on line now, with the visit counter and the Polls button working OK. However, the message board is still not running (as of 1pm today). Please check it first however as it remains the 'default' board. If it's not running, use the 'new' one, and I'll try to transfer messages to the Bravenet one when it is reliably 'up'. There appears to have been some data lost from the 'Poll', and obviously the counter stopped running for the week, so that was well out of date, but I have now cheated it back to roughly where it should be by checking stats from elsewhere. No idea what, if anything, has been lost from the message board.

Just a reminder - Bears vs Worcestershire tonight at Coundon Road at 7pm. Should be a good surface to play on judging by yesterday afternoon's match (assuming no downpours between now & 7).

6.3.02 You may have noticed the  new 'Rugby League Web Ring' panel at the foot of the page by now.  It connects to random RL sites (or to the list of sites on the 'ring' depending on which link you press - it's pretty easy to understand). So if you ever fancy an RL browse, go ahead. There are sites from all around the world (of variable quality!!)
4.3.02 I've added a new Message Board here, and to the left, as the Bravenet one seems to be showing no signs of reappearing. It's a bit rough & ready at the moment, but I may tidy it up and make it the default board. Let me know if you like or don't like.
3.3.02 It appears that Bravenet's server  is 'down' at the moment, and has been since yesterday, which means that nobody can access the Message Board, Polls or whatever. Apologies for that, but it is out of my control.
21.2.02 Just to confirm  two of the dates mentioned earlier:

Players (but everyone welcome) meeting at Coundon Road is now confirmed as 3rd March at 7pm.

The Worcester friendly on 10th March kicks off at 7pm (due to it being Mothers' Day!!)

Boomer is looking into getting some t-shirts/polos/caps/that sort of thing made. No idea of prices yet but if interested, make sure you bring some money (your guess is as good as mine!) to the meeting as he'll need it up front.

16.2.02 New questions added to 'Bears Polls'  Exercise your democratic right by clicking on the link (left).
14.2.02 At the Meeting at the Dyers Arms on Tuesday evening the following dates were agreed (put 'em in your diary now!)

26th February.  Next meeting again at Dyers Arms 9:00pm

3rd March.  Players' meeting at Coundon Rd at 7:00pm (but still to be confirmed)

10th March.  Friendly vs Worcester at Coundon Rd. Time to be confirmed

4th May.  First home game (vs Ipswich). We are also hoping to have a training session for U14s, U15s and U16s.

Note that Coundon Road is not available for this game (Reseeding pitch - again!). Barkers Butts have very kindly offered us the use of their facilities again.

7.2.02 Meeting at the Dyers. There is a pre-season meeting at the Old Dyers Arms, Spon End, Coventry on Tuesday evening (12th) at 9pm. All players, committee, and supporters welcome.
11.01.02 Happy New Year all. I was hoping to be able to put something on the site re. the new sponsorship deal. I was promised a press release ages ago but it hasn't materialized yet. I guess the deal must have gone through as Ron Manager showed me a shirt with the new sponsor's logo on it last Saturday at Coundon Road (and the less said about last Saturday the better!!). The shirts are pretty much the same as the Grand Final ones apart from said logo. Just a reminder that Ron has them for sale if you fancy one for the new season. Contact him via the contacts & links page, or catch him on the Henley bus tomorrow if you're going.

Dick Griffiths is working on a new matchday programme design for the new season. I am going to supply him with a few bits & bobs off the site, but if anyone has anything to contribute or can help in any way, I'm sure he'd be delighted. Again, Dick will doubtless be on the bus tomorrow (as every away Cov match!!).

06.12.01 I guess it's about time I put something on the site.

Not much to report, however, but for the fact that there are moves afoot to arrange a match against Worcestershire on Sunday 16th as alluded to by Matty on the Message Board. Can't supply any more details yet I'm afraid.

Ron tells us that the shirts should be available in a few days ready for Santa to pick them up - hopefully there'll be more details on that soon too! Which reminds me - I still need to pick mine up from Boomer, as long as he hasn't used it for cleaning his car.

I suppose the final thing for this little bulletin is to wish EVERYONE a very Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous (Conference-winning) New Year. See you on the 16th (assuming we have a pitch....why does that ring a bell???). Cheers All.

29.9.01 The Bears had a successful 'Awards Night' at Old Wheatleyans RFC last Saturday.

The awards went to:
Player of the Year - Al Robinson
Young Player of the Year - Rich Pepperell
Players' Player of the Year - Rich Pepperell
Supporters' Player of the Year - John Nicholls
Man of Steel - Matt Wright
Dick of the Year - Al Robinson (For his service to the underwear laundry industry)
Grasscutter of the Year - Matty Allsopp

9.9.01 The Bears v Teesside Grand Final report has finally been added to the Reports page here along with the final Player Statistics table here.

5.9.01 No report as yet, but there are some photos from the final on the Pictures and Reports pages

2.9.01 What can you say about yesterday? Plenty I suppose - but it don't come easy. I reckon I ought to start by congratulating Teesside on a fantastic display of tenacious never-say-die rugby. I bet it would have been a pretty good match for the neutral spectator, but it wasn't quite so good for the likes of Kimbo and Mark H!! I'm going to annoy a few now by saying quite publicly that in my opinion the better side won. There, said it. Boy, it's hard to say though! Whether things would have been different with Danny Malin and Ben Shepherd fit to play in the centres and Glenn Southwell and John Hobart available, who knows? I think it possibly would, but we shouldn't dwell on that as conjecture is wasted time when the game's already lost. I know all the players and officials of the club will be totally gutted by the result - more so since it was so close in the final reckoning, and after looking like holding on to that narrow lead for so long. However, you have to say that this season WILL eventually be looked back on as a roaring success, and potentially the stepping stone on which the future of the club will be built. For that, we can all thank Ron Banks, Alan Robinson, Adam Lindsay and the players for the incredible amount of hard work they all put in. Thanks for an incredible season guys. All you have to do now is go out there next season and win that single game that will make all the difference. Footnote: Ron Banks tells me that the club will be holding an awards night and, ahem, general p**s up (what does he mean?) at Old Wheatleyans RFC on the 22nd of September. Everybody welcome.

30.8.01 Grand Final News

Selection problems for the Bears. Speaking today, Coventry Bears' Club Captain Alan Robinson said that he had some selection worries for the Grand Final at Rugby on Saturday afternoon. Danny Malin is definitely out of contention through injury, whilst his partner in the centres, Ben Shepherd is suffering from a knee injury picked up in training. Ben awaits a late fitness test. One brighter point is that highly rated centre Ben Biss has declared himself available for selection after missing both the quarter- and semi-finals.

Robinson added 'We have other potential availability problems that may not be resolved until I speak to the individuals concerned at training. I hope to announce the full squad tomorrow evening'

New Kit Arriving. Better news is that Kevin Lawrence, Director of our kit sponsors Logitog, has promised a delivery of a complete new set of royal blue & white kit in time for the final. The new gear is said to be of a higher quality material than that previously used, and incorporates unique 'TotalRL.com Conference Grand Final commemorative badging. The shirts will also carry the Logitog logo across the breast.

Mindful of the confusion and disappointment caused by the non-availability of replica kit earlier in the season, the club is loath to make promises at this time, but Alan Robinson stated that he hopes a further delivery of Grand Final replicas will be made available towards the end of next week. These will be on sale to anyone who wants them at a price still to be announced.

Mine and Lucie's shirts are already on order!!

19.8.01 Crawley match report now online here

19.8.01 Just picked up the news from Ron Manager that Teesside have just beaten Hemel by 19-14 in a game he described as 'nip & tuck' all the way through. So there you have it, two new finalists this year - and two of the newest clubs in the Conference. Can't wait!

18.8.01 Crawley 16 Coventry Bears 17 In an extraordinary TotalRL.com semi-final at Bedford, Bears fought tooth & claw to gain their first final spot in their second year of competition. Victory was thoroughly deserved and might have been by a wider margin but for some uncharacteristic defensive errors. The team will now be in great heart for the final at Rugby Lions' Webb Ellis Road ground in two weeks time.

16.8.01 Coventry Bears face last year's winners Crawley Jets in the TotalRL.com Conference semi-finals on Saturday at Bedford International Athletics Stadium.
The Bears are hoping to improve on last year when they were knocked out by one point by last Saturday's play-off opponents Rotherham.

The Bears will be missing Oxford Blue John Hobart, and influential high scoring goalkicker, stand-off James Cathcart is reckoned doubtful. Both players suffered broken noses in last week's tough encounter with Rotherham.

Meanwhile, Danny Malin and Carl Southwell - both instrumental in the win over Rotherham last weekend - have been named for Coventry RU's friendly at Berry Hill on Saturday, and so will also miss the Semi.

Coach Adam Lyndsay said after training "We've got a good squad and again the squad players know what they have to do"
Having lost a toss of a coin the Bears will be playing in their all-blue kit due to a clash of colours.

Just as a reminder, there is a coach running to the game and supporters are welcome to travel with the team.
Contact Ron Banks on 07956 251379 for details.

15.8.01 REVISED ROUTE TO BEDFORD I have just received this notification of a revision to the original route

On the weekend of 18th/19th August 2001, the road (A421) which leads from J13 of the Ml (the main route into Bedford for all traffic) will be CLOSED as new access roads are built & changes are made to existing routes for a new industrial & retail development in Elstow. Diversionary routes will probably be in place. The most direct route into Bedford from J12 is through Ampthill but there was a serious fire on the High Street several weeks ago and access is limited and not suitable for coaches or larger vehicles. Therefore, we suggest you follow these directions in preference to any previously issued.

13.8.01 Updated player stats now online here.

12.8.01 Report on the Giants match now online here

11.8.01 They Might be Giants...... Coventry Bears 28 Rotherham Giants 21. The Bears put in a stunning second-half performance today, making it a very happy return to fortress Coundon Road, and reaping sweet revenge for last season's semi-final defeat. Bears started slowly, much like the Wilderspool debacle, but weathered the storm - with veteran Rotherham RU's lock John Dudley doing much of the early damage with two tries - and made their undoubted superiority in guile, skill and speed tell in the end. Francis Slater was named as 'Ron Manager's Man of the Match' and received the bottle of vodka (collected on his behalf by Carl Southwell).

The hard work has only just started however, with the Bears being rewarded with an extremely difficult semi against holders Crawley at Bedford next weekend.

But yes Alex, we CAN smell what the Bears are cooking....

Report will be posted ASAP.

9.8.01 Coventry Bears at long last move back home to a resurfaced Coundon Road on Saturday to play the Rotherham Giants (Kick off 2;30).
The game is  the Quarter-Final of the competition and the Bears will be looking to avenge last season's semi final defeat when they went down by just one point at Warrington's Wilderspool ground.
The draw for this years Semi-Finals has taken place and the winners of this tie will face either Ipswich or Crawley Jets. Crawley have won the competition for the last two years including last years win over Rotherham at Coundon Rd.
Coventry Chairman Ron Banks said " We will have to do it tough if we are to go further than last year. However we owe Rotherham one; we feel we were hard done-by in the semis last year and Crawley will have to be beaten at some stage if we are to pick up the trophy".

The Bears have been asked to provide helpers on Grand Final Day (1st September, Webb Ellis Road, Rugby). Anyone willing to help, please contact Ron Banks on 02476 455856. (I'd love to help Ron, but you know exactly where I'll be if the Bears aren't involved!)

8.8.01 I had big problems with the site last night which resulted in me losing the links to some of the services we use amongst other things. I spent hours trying to put it all right but ran out of time. I've now sorted out a few more links including the message board. If you spot anything that isn't working properly, please let me know.

8.8.01 This week's player stats have been added to their own page here. If you think that your own figures are incorrect, could you please let Ron Manager know (with a breakdown of what it should be). (I've corrected your try count here, John Hobart).

7.8.01 Updated League Tables added here

6.8.01 Bears v Outlaws report and pictures now added here. Unfortunately for the gents in question, this version doesn't credit three players with hat-tricks (unlike the Telegraph version - sorry guys!). Oh, and while I'm online, I've just noticed that we've passed 7000 on the 'odometer'. That's the target passed well before the end of the season. Thanks to all for using this site.

Tables etc. should be added tomorrow.

4.8.01 Coventry Bears 44 Nottingham Outlaws 12. Bears finished off the league section of the season with a hard-fought game against their second-placed East Midlands rivals. Tries from Jimmy Cathcart, Danny Malin (two apiece), Ian McGregor, Al Robinson, Francis Slater and Ben Biss, were topped up by six conversions from Jimmy.

Julian Harrison was in attendance, and after the game confirmed the draw for the Play-off games. These will be:

Coventry v Rotherham

Crawley v Ipswich

Hemel v N. London

Teeside v Newcastle

He was also offered Bedworth RFC as a possible venue for one of the semi-finals, and it seems likely now that this game will be transferred back to the Saturday 18th date as originally mooted due to potential unavailabilities for the Sunday trip to Nottingham.

3.8.01 So, the Bears return to League action tomorrow after a weekend off (well, those that didn't turn out for the Lionhearts, anyway). The only team news I have is what I glean from the Message Board, and it appears that Johnny Nicholls and Wayne Box will be away on their hols. I doubt any more info will be forthcoming at this late stage.

The match, against second-placed Nottingham Outlaws, takes place at Bedworth RFC's Rectory Fields (Smarts Road) ground, and kicks off at 2.30. We can be certain that the Outlaws will be fired-up and looking for revenge after conceding the game in their own backyard earlier in the season, but exposing one or two frailties in the Bears' defence in the process. It should be a stonker.

If you don't know, The Bedworth ground is just off the A444 Bedworth bypass, just north of the M6 junction 3. Take the first slip road off the bypass, and turn left at the bottom (lights). Follow the road to the Cross Keys pub and turn left into Smarts Road. You shouldn't be able to miss it from there. One word of caution. You may want to leave a little extra time to get there. I'm told that the northern section of the M42 is CLOSED for bridge demolition or something this weekend and that the diversion may be partly re-routed along the A444. Just a thought.

Question....will we play another game within the boundaries of the City of Coventry this season? One this year so far, and it seems an awful long time ago doesn't it??

30.7.01 Pictures from the Lionhearts game now on line here. Be warned, it's a pretty big file so it takes a while to download. I may split it into two pages later in the week if I can be bothered.

29.7.01 Scottish Courage Cup at Hemel RLFC - Lionhearts 36 RAF 18   Behind at half time, the Lionhearts team came back in a storming second half, 'nilling' the RAF side. The three Bears - Matty Allsopp, Al Robinson and Johnny Nicholls - all played a big part in the win, contributing to a very entertaining match in the sapping heat (Salty drank some beer too!).
I managed to get a few shots of the game (when the camera wasn't playing up) and I'll try to get a few of them on the site one night this week.

22.7.01 Three new questions added to the 'Bears Polls'. Click on link on left of this page. Just a bit of fun remember!!!

Reports for both the Wolverhampton and Oxford matches now on line here.

The Bears were awarded a 50 points to nil scoreline by the panel for the unfulfilled fixture against Durham.

The Bears have signed 3 Fijian soldiers who are all stationed in Coventry. The three are Mathew Koto, Rusty Kalounniti and Avisai (Cisco) Gaynavoy. All three have played Rugby League at home in Fiji but will be looking to play Union in the winter. Cisco Gaynavoy played from the bench against Wolverhampton Wizards on Saturday and looked very impressive whilst on the field.

12.7.01 Probably the last update to the site before I go off on my hols. The break means that Lucie and I will miss our first two matches of the season, so we're hoping that things go well - especially at Oxford. Good luck guys (and you Joni).

First the important bit....Coventry Bears entertain Wolverhampton Wizards at Barkers' Butts' Pickford Grange Lane ground on Saturday (kick off 2.30) looking to make their final push for the end of season play-offs. The Bears are keen to make amends after their shock defeat at Leicester two weeks ago.
This will be their first home game since defeating Oxford at the beginning of June. That game was probably the best they have ever played and coach Adam Lindsay will be hoping the Bears can rediscover that sort of form.
Lindsay said "We were disappointed last week that we could not play. We need to play well this week to prepare ourselves for the last two games of the season against Oxford away and for our final game of the season, at home to our nearest rivals in the Midlands Conference, Nottingham Outlaws"
The Wizards are bottom of the Midlands Conference but have definitely improved as the season has gone on, and they will be looking to see just how far they have progressed since losing 78-2 to the Bears earlier in the season.

It was nice to see the  write-up and picture in the Telegraph tonight (the one with Andy Lewis standing up at the front). The only trick missed, however, was failing to get the URL of this site printed in it. Things like that can make a difference in promoting the club to a wider audience. Shame. Steps off soapbox and moves on....

Finally, I missed these last two bits earlier in the week (sorry Ron) so here they are - better late than never.........Coventry Bears' game against Durham was cancelled when Durham were unable to field a team. This is the second home game in succession that the Bears have lost in this fashion.
Coventry Chairman Ron Banks commented that "It really is a poor show that teams are not prepared to fulfill their commitment to play the fixtures. Our friends at Barkers' Butts rugby union club go to a lot of time and trouble to prepare the ground and we have had to let them down twice.
The Conference needs to address the problem before we lose any more face. We have a good following at Coventry and people want to see us play. I am assured that next week the Wolverhampton game will go ahead."

The Coventry Bears U13s team held a festival of mini rugby league at Barkers' Butts RUFC on Sunday.
Three teams, Coventry, Wolverhampton and Worcester (aka Bromsgrove elsewhere on this site!) competed in the tournament. Both Wolverhampton and Worcester fielded experienced teams whilst the junior Bears played their first ever games.
The Bears were defeated in both their games but only lost narrowly by 10 points to eventual competition winners Wolverhampton.
The Junior Bears coach Rich (Chunky) Davies said after the game that "It was a good experience and hopefully we can build on this next season at U14 level".

Cheers all for now, and good luck. See you at the Outlaws game. Someone please text me the score on Saturday please. Pretty please.

8.7.01 The Bears under 13s played in a mini tournament at Barkers' along with Wolverhampton and Bromsgrove this afternoon. I've put a few pictures on the site here

6.7.01 - 10.30 am - Have just been notified that the Coventry Bears v Durham Phoenix match is cancelled due to Durham not being able to raise a team.......Hopefully the u13s tournament will still go ahead at Barkers tomorrow (1pm) so I can only suggest you go there instead. I will NOT be offering a bottle of vodka to the first scorer of six tries however!!!!

4.7.01 Coventry Bears who lost their first game of the season last week are boosted by the return to the starting line up of captain Alan Robinson who returns following a hamstring problem. Robinson was on the bench last week but has now declared himself fully fit.
The Bears who play Durham At Barkers Butts' Pickford Grange Lane ground on Saturday (Kick off 2;30) will be looking to consolidate their position at the top of the midlands conference.
The winners of each conference are guaranteed a place in the end of season play-offs and the Bears are confident that they can achieve this despite last weeks reversal against Leicester.
Captain Alan Robinson said this week that "The players were disappointed in the way they played against Leicester and are determined to get the season back on track this week against Durham".

Coundon Road's pitch was graded, dressed with topsoil and seeded again yesterday in an effort to bring it up to scratch. It is for this reason that the pitch is unlikely to be available for Bears games much before the end of the season.

The Bears U13s play in a festival of mini rugby league at Pickford Grange Lane the home of Barkers Butts RU on Sunday. The festival, featuring teams from the midlands conference, begins at 1.00.

2.7.01 Leicester Report posted here

30.6.01 All bad news this week, with the Bears on the wrong end of a 36-26 scoreline at Leicester. Cov started slowly and struggled to get going throughout. Questions need to be asked about commitment and communication following this very poor display, and it's no use hiding behind a decidedly comical refereeing display and the fact that a few of the Cov 'dogs' didn't turn up. The fact is that Leicester were by far the better side on the day and looked absolutely nothing like the team that were comprehensively beaten at Coundon Road early in the season. There's some sorting out to be done at training this week.....

27.6.01  Now then, now then, what's that all about then? It seems that Birmingham Bulldogs have hit on the solution as to how to avoid getting a right royal mauling by a team that's patently streets better. What's the solution? Yes, of course, DON'T TURN UP FOR THE GAME! Simple innit? So, to go over the facts as we see them. Brum get dumped on their botties at their own patch on the first day of the season. Subsequently they see the Bears creaming all opposition by a cricket score (with the noble exception of Nottingham who gave us a game). Aha, it looks like a hiding to nothing on the cards doesn't it? No, just don't turn up....make excuses that you can only raise 12 players (dead plausible that when based in a city of over a million souls)...and get a result awarded by the RLC of .....wait for it....Bears 18  Bulldogs 0.

So that's fair then isn't it?

Comments on the board please...

Ron tells me that he's out of action for some time yet; poor chap can't even get upstairs to his computer to play on his favourite website, although he's hoping to get there soon. So, in anticipation of that, all the best mate. Here's to a speedy recovery and to seeing you back at the games as soon as poss. Do it for Ron (and for the RLC score-fixers) on Saturday lads. Go you Bears.

On the subject of the match, it's at Leicester Forest RFC's ground, Hinckley Road (A47), Leicester Forest East LE3 3PJ. Using the M69, go straight on under the M1 and take the next left on the A563 Distributor Road. Pass thru Braunstone Town and turn left (roundabout) onto the A47 (signposted Hinckley). Pass back over the M1 and the Cricket and Rugby grounds are about 1 1/2 miles along on the right.

22.6.01 Well, there you go, another weekend is upon us and there's no Bear-watching to be done again. Don't know about you, but I'm getting withdrawal symptoms. I may be too old and clapped-out to play rugby these days but I still need my Saturday afternoon screaming on the touchline (and a couple of beers) just to finish off the week properly. Just for something to do, I'm (and Mrs. Kimbo) off to tab up some serious hills (alright, mountains according to the Welsh folk). I suppose it'll keep me quiet (too much gasping for oxygen to make much of a fuss) but it's not the same. It was booked ages ago or I'd have made the trip down to Hemel to cheer (scream) on Salty, Francis and Mad Dog in the Lionhearts v GB Police. Sounds like it could be an intriguing match. If you fancy it, the kickoff is at 2pm (not 2.30 as advertised elsewhere) on Sunday. If you go, give the lads a yell for me & Lucie and, if you get chance, text me the final score. Please! (07787 541291).

Have a great weekend....

20.6.01 Just as I was thinking that it was a dead week for news, this comes in -

MEDIA RELEASE

A Coventry entertainment venue is hoping to help one of the city's newest sports teams 'roar' into the national spotlight.

Coventry Bears Rugby League side were formed in 1998 and play their home matches at their Rugby Union counterparts’ Coundon Road stadium.

Despite still being in their infancy, the Bears have fast gained a reputation as one of the most promising amateur outfits in the country, and are hoping to prove that by scooping a national title.

Their cause has now been boosted by the backing of £40 million entertainment complex SkyDome Coventry, which is to become the team's official sponsor.

SkyDome's Jumpin Jaks live entertainment bar and Ikon and Diva nightclubs are backing the Bears and hoping to raise awareness of the side's considerable achievements.

Bears manager Alan Robinson, a former professional Rugby League star, believes the tie-up with the SkyDome outlets will provide a huge boost for his men.

He said: "We have been playing games at Coundon Road and generating decent crowds and that is despite the fact that I still think a lot of people in Coventry are unaware that the city has such a successful Rugby League side.

"We launched the Bears with a series of friendly fixtures against established teams and we beat them all - mostly quite convincingly.

"Then last year we entered the Rugby League Conference, progressed to the national stages and missed out on the national final by just one point.

"That includes matches played before big crowds as curtain raisers to Superleague matches so we are really putting Coventry on the Rugby League map."

After a successful start to this campaign the Bears are hoping to go one better and scoop the national crown, something Jaks manager Andrew MacLeod thinks will be great for the city.

He said: "Every city takes pride in its sports sides and the fact that Coventry Bears are doing do well on a national stage should please everybody here.

"The team regularly enjoy a Saturday night at the complex after their matches and always get a warm welcome from other revellers.

"We are hoping that by officially supporting them we will help them make them into a force in the city in the same way that we are.

"The popularity of Jaks, Ikon and Diva means that thousands of people a week enjoy nights out here and if we can help the Bears raise some support from that, then all the better."

That view was echoed by Ikon and Diva manager Ian Knight who said the Rugby League side encapsulated the city's current ambitious nature.

He said: "At the moment the whole of Coventry is marching forward reputation wise, with the Phoenix Initiative set to attract flocks of tourists, the revamping of the city centre shopping setup and SkyDome having a big impact on the country's night-time scene.

"The Coventry Bears are hoping to add sporting success to that and an organization as big and popular as SkyDome has a responsibility to back that kind of enthusiasm."

ISSUED ON BEHALF OF SKYDOME COVENTRY BY ADVENT COMMUNICATIONS.

......and don't forget to vote in the Bulldogs Poll below.......

19.6.01 As it's a bit of a news-free week in Bear-land, I thought I'd give you something to do. Please click on the link (on the left) and answer the Poll question. Just a bit of fun.

17.6.01 Updated League Tables added here. Unfortunately, due to yesterday's game being cancelled, we've been knocked off the top spot - albeit temporarily.

15.6.01 Just been informed (at 21.25) that tomorrow's match against Birmingham has been CANCELLED. Definitely nothing to do with Coventry's burgeoning injury list. More details to follow as soon as we have it. Please pass this on to anyone you know that is intending to play/support and does not have access to the web. Thanks.

14.6.01 Injury list grows. Coventry Bears Play Birmingham Bulldogs at Barkers Butts RFC, Pickford Grange Lane with an earlier than usual kick off time of 1:00pm.
The Bears have been hit by an injury crisis. Influential captain Alan Robinson is sure to miss the game (Hamstring) along with Scott Carver (elbow), Rich Davies (broken arm), and Craig Quick (Dislocated shoulder). Work commitments also rule out Rich Draper and John Nicholls.
Coach Adam Lindsay commented "I said earlier in the season that everyone would get a chance to shine and this is the opportunity some of the guys have been waiting for. We cannot afford to slip up and Birmingham will be looking to defeat us. They have never beaten us at any level and I don't want them to start now".

Photos   I'm hoping that the new digital camera will arrive tomorrow. If possible and time allows before the match, I'd like to get some decent individual mugshots together with a really good team shot (shame about the missing players, but whatever, we can always do another one later on).

12.6.01 A reminder that Saturday's game against Birmingham Bulldogs (1pm kick off) is at Barker's Butts RFC. This is due to the Coundon Road pitch not being ready yet following re-seeding. Please come along as I'm sure that you'll find the Barkers staff very welcoming (I'm sure they were rubbing their hands together the other Saturday when 150 spectators turned up and bought beer!). Directions can be found further down this page....

10.6.01 Ron's Nottingham match report  and updated League Tables added.

9.6.01 Nottingham Outlaws 22 Coventry Bears 46

A strangely subdued Bears side took their time getting into their stride before finally seeing off the Outlaws' gritty challenge. Danny Malin scored a hat-trick of tries, with Struan Murray, Al Robinson, Francis Slater, Ben Biss and  Rich Pepperell weighing in with one each. Jimmy Cathcart converted  six and added a penalty.

Little satisfaction will be taken from this match by the boys, but surely it can only help focus minds for next Saturday's return against Birmingham.

8.6.01 Directions to Nottingham:

Leave the M1 at Junction 24, A453 Nottingham (South).

Stay on the A453 for about 8 miles, passing through Clifton, following the signs for Nottingham.

Once through Clifton, you will see a sign for Wilford and West Bridgford (B679) just before a large roundabout. Turn off here.
Pass under the Ring Road until you reach a junction with traffic lights.

Turn left at lights. Stay on this road for three quarters of a mile into Wilford Village.

Park on road next to Wilford Ferry Pub/Moderns Rugby Club.
PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN THE PUB CAR PARK

MAP

5.6.01 a few player pictures now added to the 'Team Photos' page just to start the ball rolling. Blimey, the sights you see when you aven't got yer gun! Nicholls'll be claiming for a new camera lens at this rate.

4.6.01 there will be a supporters' minibus running to Nottingham on Saturday. Contact Pete at the Old Dyers Arms, Spon Street  for details (sorry, you'll have to look up the number!). There are 4/5 places available.

4.6.01 Updated player stats for Week 5 (I can only hope they're correct - they weren't last week according to J. Nicholls Esq).

Current League Tables added here

3.6.01 Bears Players Honoured. Eight Coventry Bears players have been invited to train with the TotalRL.Com select team ‘The Lionhearts’.

The Lionhearts play The GB Police later this month and will also play in Rugby League’s premier cup competition the ‘Challenge Cup’, the final of which will be held at Murrayfield.

The eight are Dan Price, Danny Malin, Francis Slater, John Hobart, Johnny Nicholls, Alan Robinson, James Cathcart and Matt Wright.

Congratulations and good luck to all of them.

3.6.01 Ron's Oxford Match Report now online (click on 'Match Reports'). League tables and Player stats to be updated tomorrow night.

2.6.01 This week's match - quick overview

TotalRL.com Rugby League Conference – Week 5

Coventry Bears v Oxford Cavaliers

Barker’s Butts RFC, Pickford Grange Lane

In a stunning display of handling, running and defence, Coventry Bears blew away the expected challenge from the Cavaliers. Dominating from the early stages when Slater crossed for the first of his hat-trick, Cov sent out a loud and clear message to the rest of the conference, one that reads "CAN YOU SMELL WHAT THE BEARS ARE COOKING?".

The teams turned round with Bears leading by 32 points, yet there was little evidence at this point of what was to come in the second period. Coventry simply left Oxford in their wake, totally dominating in every phase. Cavalier’s heads started to drop and the tries piled up.

The honours list reads Ben Shepherd 5 tries, Francis Slater 3, James Cathcart and Rich Draper 2 each, with Alan Robinson, Johnny Nicholls and Scott Carver all chipping in one apiece. Cathcart also converted 12 for a superb personal total of 32, deservedly earning him the Man of the Match award. Bring on Nottingham Outlaws….

Final Score Coventry Bears 84 Oxford Cavaliers 0

1.6.01 For the benefit of anyone who's never been there, directions to Barker's Butts ground for the Bears v Oxford Cavaliers match (2.30 tomorrow). Pick up the A45 towards Birmingham (if you're coming from Oxford, both the A423 Oxford Road and the Warwick bypass[A46] lead you on to this). As you leave the built-up area of Coventry, keep looking for a large Land Rover dealer on the left-hand side of the road. Shortly after this you'll need to fork left onto the B4102 towards Meriden. Almost immediately (before the roundabout) turn left onto Pickford Grange Lane. Barkers' ground is on the right. There's plenty of parking.

27.05.01 No official report again yet this week. Bears prevailed against a determined Wizards side, who took the game to the visitors and were a little unlucky not to cross the line on at least one occasion, but in the end were limited to just a penalty. Once again Nicholls, Hobart, Slater, Robinson and Van der Walt were in imperious form, and many more outstanding individual performances were evident. However, an unusually casual approach to teamwork let the side down on more than one occasion - a little over-confidence maybe - and the overall impression was of a rather low-key display. Easy to say from the sidelines, but improvements will be needed before next week's visitors Oxford come to town. Training promises to be tough this week!

Bears Scorers - Nicholls (3), Hobart (3), Malin (3), Slater, Van der Walt, Flatman, Robinson, A. N. Other (sorry, completely lost track!)  Conversions, J. Cathcart 11

Speaking of next Saturday's game - it seems that Coundon Road will not, sadly, be available after all, and the match will be at Barker's Butts ground. I'll post directions a little later in the week for the benefit of visitors.

27.05.01 This website has now moved to a new server provided by our friends at Coventry and Warwickshire Network (CWN). I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Chris Studman at CWN for his help and support in providing this opportunity to upgrade our URL to a more professional one, and make the site more visible to the world and (crucially for me) allow me to use a better (read easier!!!) editing tool for creating these pages on. I'd urge you to visit CWN on a regular basis. They've always been supporters of the Bears, covering matches even in the early days of ad hoc friendly matches. They also provide a fine service of news and information for the city and the county, covering much more than just sport. You'll find a link at the bottom of this page.

When I say that the site has moved, I suppose it would be more accurate to say duplicated (even though it is brand new from the ground up) as the old site is still available at the coventrybears.homestead.com URL.  I envisage that it will remain thus for some time - at least until we have modified all letter-headings etc to the new URL and I'm sure that everyone is aware of the new site.

I've purposely made this site clean and simple so as to take up as little server space as possible and to help with download performance. Therefore you will find that the silly 'bouncing text' effects have now gone, but the trade-off is a more useable, quicker site. You'll notice that I've kept the same basic layout and feel, and navigation as the old site.

This Page will, hopefully, be kept up-to-date with all the news that's fit to print about the Bears and their exploits at Coundon Road and on their travels.

I will attempt to get the results of all games on this page on the same day, together with a short match report (very short if it's left to me, but much more detailed if anyone else would care to contribute).

As ever, all items of news (or anything else that you think may be of interest to the rugby-loving folk of Coventry) can be sent to me on my e-mail link (see elsewhere on this page). We can always use good quality match photos, so if you have a digital camera - start practicing!!

21.05.01 It's been announced that this year's Conference Final will be played a few miles down the road at the home of Rugby Lions, Webb Ellis Road. It may not be Coundon Road, but it should still be incentive enough - if any were needed - to go all the way. More details when available.

17.05.01 Better news on the stadium front. Now that the Wizards games have been switched, it is hoped that ALL home games can be played at 'Fortress Coundon Road', although some will be on the school pitch while the main pitch refurb is ongoing.

16.5.01 The two matches against Wolverhampton Wizards have now been 'swapped round' , meaning that the away meeting is now on the 26th May, while the home fixture goes to the 14th of July. Well, that's really not good news as it means I'll miss the home game as I'm off to sunny (?) Norfolk that day. I'll update the Fixtures & Results list when I get a chance.

Ron tells me that he needs the bookings in for the coach ASAP. He's just trying to make the trip break even as it is a long (read expensive) run, so it'd be nice to fill the coach if possible. And the more support the better for the team, obviously. By the way, the coach leaves Coundon Road at........wait for it..........8am!!!

He also tells me that 'Pop' Southwell is not allowed out to play on Saturday. Some flimsy excuse to do with a new baby apparently....(seriously, congrats to you both).

There is more injury misery this week with Andy Lewis breaking his hand last Saturday, and a few other knocks to contend with. On a brighter note, however, we have some returnees including Ben Shepherd. I'll post more team details as soon as poss.

The promised new replica kit and casual clothing still hasn't turned up yet despite many promises. Watch this space....

You may have noticed some activity with a digital camera at Saturday's match. With luck, the results will be electronically making their way to me soon and I'll be able to post some particularly gruesome mugshots on the Profiles page...at last. Again, I'll let you know.

13.05.01 Coach to Durham. Ron's organising a coach for the Durham trip on Saturday. Cost will be in the region of £10 to £15 per person. Contact him (see Contacts & Links) if you'd like to go.

12.05.01 Coventry Bears 64 Leicester Phoenix 12 A superb follow-up to last week's opening win at Birmingham by the under-strength Bears. who can doubt the seriousness of Cov's challenge for this year's title now? Match report available here

(Sunday evening. Sorry about the delay, but I've been having the old Server problems again - I managed to publish this age and then it left me high and dry. It's there now though).

The replica kit was supposed to arrive today, but didn't. I'll let you know when it does. Keep that wallet handy!

9.5.01 A reminder. Just a quick reminder that Saturday's match at home to Leicester Phoenix (Coundon Road 2.30) is a FREE gate and is followed by a Karaoke party in the clubhouse. Alan is looking for a few volunteers to help distribute fliers at supermarkets etc. on Thursday evening. If you feel like helping to boost the gate, please contact him ASAP (number and address on the Contacts & Links page.

Chunky injured . Unfortunately Rich Davies has fractured the ulna of his right forearm and needs an operation to reset the bone and to insert a metal plate. He's not expecting to be available again until the play-off stages, 'but isn't ruling anything out'!!

Shep too. Ben Shepherd also picked up an injury - strained ankle ligaments - in the win on Saturday. He will miss Saturday's match against Leicester.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery Chunky & Ben.....

6.5.01 Birmingham match report now on-line (click on 'Match Reports' )

I also meant to mention yesterday that Ron now has some very nifty enamel Bears lapel badges for sale at two quid each. Show your support for the lads! See Ron at CR on Saturday or contact him via the 'Contacts & Links' page. One more thing; the team looked great in their new 'Logitog' kit yesterday (it came earlier than expected so made an early debut). We're expecting a range of replica kit in very soon (hopefully this week), so make sure your wallet is well stuffed for the Leicester game!

5.5.01 Birmingham 0 Bears 30. A good start to the season with the Bears controlling a fractious game for most of the 80 minutes. Some fine tries and several superb individual performances combined with excellent on-the-line defence ensured maximum points against a side that flattered to deceive. Full report will be posted as soon as I receive it.

27.05.01 No official report again yet this week. Bears prevailed against a determined Wizards side, who took the game to the visitors and were a little unlucky not to cross the line on at least one occasion, but in the end were limited to just a penalty.

14.05.01 Current League Tables now added here.

20.4.01 Snippets  A few nuggets of information picked up in conversation. Good news soon to be released about the playing kit for this coming season. Suffice to say we'll have a new-look team to cheer this year (from the Leicester home game on). All part of the drive to establish Coventry Bears as the most 'professional' amateur club around. More about that as soon as possible.  We hope to have a number of new players on the books for the summer campaign, including James Hadfield and Shaun Brady, who many of you will know from their appearances for Cov FC. These guys will add some extra firepower to the pack. I await full details of the entire squad and as soon as I have them they'll be found here.

You'll notice a few minor changes from the old site. In the main these are designed to speed up operation, but the overall feel (even though it is completely rebuilt from the ground up) is  similar.

Sunday's game against Bedford will be an opportunity for the management team to run the rule over some new faces and see how things are likely to shape up. The team taking the field will be by no means full-strength (I guess RU commitments see to that) but it will still be competitive. The guys would welcome any travelling support; check with Ron for directions.

A bit of slightly worse news is that Coundon Road will not be available for a couple of games due to re-seeding (Wot? Grass on the pitch? Whatever next?). This means that we will have a temporary home for a while and a couple of local Midlands One RU clubs are in the frame to host these games. We'll let you know. One of these games will be against Wolverhampton and it is hoped to have 'curtain raiser' Under 16s and Under 19s games that day. It'll be nice to see the future Bears stars in action.

19.4.01 The Bears will play a pre-season friendly at Bedford Athletic Stadium on Sunday 22 April Kick off 3.00. Contact Ron Banks on 07956 251379 for details of how to get there.

27.3.01. As threatened, I've now posted a form for the players to fill in and return. This will form the basis of a set of profiles, hopefully to be supplemented with mugshots ASAP. Click on the link on the Contacts & Links page. Please fill them in and return to Alan (e-mail address on the same page). Ta very much.

30.04.01 More Snippets (from Ron). The format for this year's play-offs is as follows:
The winners of the six conferences plus the two teams coming second with the best record qualify for the play offs.
The four conference winners with the best record have home advantage. The pairings will be made geographically matching neighbouring teams.
The Semi-finals will be held at neutral RLC grounds. (Clubs wishing to be considered should apply).
The Final venue is yet to be announced.

Looking ahead.....
The day we play Birmingham at home, June 16th, is the day London Broncos play Bradford (6.05pm kick-off) at Welford Rd, Leicester. The league will allow a dispensation to kick off early that day in order that teams and supporters can go to Leicester to watch the match. We have to apply for permission and get Birmingham's approval.
Do we want to go? Answers please on the Message Board.

23.04.01 Bedford Swifts v Coventry Bears Match Report has been supplied by Tracey Hirons at Bedford Swifts. Many thanks for that.

18.03.2001. Ah well, I've decided to unleash this site on the great unwashed even though it's nothing like as complete as I wanted it to be. I guess I'm just in a giving mood after a good day out in Richmond yesterday, drinking too much, eating too much and watching some good rugby (albeit of the 'other' persuasion).
While navigating around this site, you can always get back to this home page by clicking on Butty the Bear (you've never looked better Claire!) over on the left hand side.
The main shortcoming at the moment is the lack of any player profiles and pictures, but I guess that will have to wait. I will put a 'pro-forma' on here soon - although I am mindful of the tricks and abuse that this might lead to! If you, as a player, would like to fill it in, copy it and return it to me via e-mail (there's a 'mail-me' type thingy somewhere hereabouts, I'll make a start.
So, have a look around the site. As I say, it's nothing like ready, but hopefully it will go some small way to filling a need. If you have any comments, criticisms, suggestions and hopefully any contributions, I'd love to hear them. Use the e-mail button, or use the Message Board.
On the subject of the Message Board - let's try to keep it as lively as poss. It's in a similar format to the one on the Cov site, which the players seem to like (!!!), so it'd be nice to see comments and observations from fans and players alike. Just keep it clean and abuse-free and so far as I'm concerned, anything goes.
There is a page here called 'Beginner's Guide'. It's not complete yet, but it contains a lot of useful info about the rules and objectives of the 13-a-side game. Those coming along for a first-time-look at League may find it useful. I'll just add that it is lifted (in its current form) from the Bradford Bulls site, with their permission. You'll also find Tables and Fixtures elsewhere, and there is a potted history (courtesy of Al Robinson) of the Club. Thanks for that Al, and also for the excellent artwork dotted around the site. It looks really good (well, I think so anyway).
Finally, there are some useful links on the, er, Links page. If you would like to add any that you've found to be interesting or useful, pass them on and I'll add them.
Finally, good luck to the team (teams!) on this second competitive season. Last Summer wasn't bad for openers was it? Let's get behind the lads and show the rest of 'em exactly what Coventry Bears RLFC are capable of. CAN YOU SMELL WHAT THE BEARS ARE COOKIN'???

12.3.2001. The new season starts on the 5th of May with a tough away game at Birmingham Bulldogs. Last year's corresponding ties were close affairs with the Bears just shading it on both occasions. Birmingham went on to top the Conference by dint of the fact that they didn't lose both their cross-conference ties - unlike the Bears. However, there was a touch of annoyance in this for Bears' fans and players (and Butty) as we had a 100% record in all the local conference ties - the only club to achieve this. However, it's a matter of much pride that the lads went on to lay their bogey, at Manchester, in the quarter final, only to be narrowly defeated by Rotherham at Warrington. The intention of all concerned is to put the record straight this season and go ALL THE WAY.......starting with Birmingham. See the rest of the season's fixtures on the 'Fixtures & Results' page.

23.3.2001. You have probably spotted this by now on the message board, but....MEETING AT THE COUNDON PUB , BARKER'S BUTTS LANE 8.00PM SUNDAY 25TH MARCH (OPPOSITE COUNDON RD., COVENTRY RUGBY CLUB GROUND). Message to all players. I will expect you all to make this meeting as it is the first which will outline the format of the season etc. as well as deciding which training days we will be having. There will be one or two trial games at the end of May which will decide the two (First and Second team) squads.
The youth team format will also be decided but we will probably have a separate meeting at a later date to organise this for the youth players as fixtures are yet to be organized. Any problems please call me on 07974 517519/ or 02476 228486. I look forward to seeing all the old faces as well as many new on Sunday at 8.00pm sharp. (Posted by Alan Robinson).
